Science Boot Camp For Librarians – A Five Campus Collaboration., Naka J. Ishii, Elizabeth Winiarz, Marion Muskiewicz

Presentation at the ACRL New England Chapter annual conference, 13 May 2011 with with Marion Muskiewicz (UMass Lowell) and Elizabeth Winiarz (UMass Dartmouth) on the inception and collaborative creation of an annual "boot camp" for science librarians. This inexpensive and intensive program covers 3 science subjects over 2.5 days to bring librarians up to speed on these topics. Usually, one faculty member gives an overview of the field, and another describes a current research area. This event also provides librarians with an informal way to network and enjoy each other's company.

This moderated discussion will cover the two roles that institutional repositories can play when talking to instructors about copyright and fair use. On the one hand, we show repositories as a source of materials for instructors who are confused or concerned about the rules related the use of copyrighted materials in their teaching. On the other, we demonstrate how our own institutional repository, ScholarWorks, can be used as a publishing tool by instructors who want more control over how their works are used in education. The decision to host a digital repository or purchase a hosted solution can be a daunting one. What are some of the factors involved? Who should be consulted along the way? How does one go about making this decision? This presentation addresses these questions and the decision process that led the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries to choose Digital Commons, the digital repository software developed and hosted by bePress. Several projects currently underway in ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst are highlighted.
