Honors Theses
“Leadership is one of the most observed and least understood phenomena.” Despite his extensive research and knowledge in the field, James MacGregor Burns still professes the complexity of the concept of leadership. The abstract nature of the topic does not lend itself to a brief synopsis or a limited understanding of a specific aspect of leadership. In many ways it eludes being confined to a particular category and exists across and between different academic disciplines. The objective of this project is therefore three-fold, (1) to analyze the current as well as historical patterns of racial distribution and educational outcomes in the Richmond metropolitan area, (2) to provide current students with this data, and (3) to create an opportunity for dialogue on the data across school, racial and economic boundaries. Most scholars, business leaders, and politicians would agree that we are all part of an increasingly global community. The fax machine, telephone, and internet allow for instantaneous communications with people around the world. In addition, most professionals are forced to come into contact with members of other cultures, whether it be for academic research or commence. This study arises out of the question, what implications does globalization have for leaders, and how are leaders affected by extended experiences, such as study abroad, in which …

My belief is that we must examine issues concerning our young women, their educational experiences, opportunities they are offered, people they are exposed to and their life in school. There appears to be a lack of emphasis on leadership and women. Without addressing this issue in the early stages of a young girl's development, we will continue to feed the notion that male standards are the norm, My initial question is intended to generate an in depth look at the impact of teachers, curriculum, students and the environment on the development of leadership …

Honors Theses
Our senior project intends to replicate a leadership curriculum developed by Lockett on two target groups at Ridge Elementary School in Richmond, VA. The first group being student government and the second being "at-risk" students. The purpose of the project will be to modify the leadership curriculum in a manner that addresses the distinct needs of the two target groups in an effort to help them develop leadership skills and awareness in areas where they are deficient e.g. self esteem, communication, etc. The question we seek to answer in this project will be to determine the effectiveness of a leadership …
