The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand early resignation of Salvation Army officers in the Southern Territory by investigating their lived experiences with the phenomenon. Despite the efforts of many leadership development programs, more than 80 percent of new leaders transitioning into the first role as a leader fail to make a successful transition (Korn Ferry Leadership Principles, 2018). This paper studied a leader’s failure to shift his or her thinking and behaviors from an individual contributor mindset to a people leader mindset. In this non-experimental correlational study, the researcher examines the relationship between participative leadership and project success. The researcher addresses concerns expressed in the literature that project success rates are below a desirable level. The study employed a survey methodology with participants from two professional organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina. The findings demonstrate that participative leadership behaviors and project success rates are significantly correlated, and each factor of participative leadership is significantly correlated with project success.
