Expanding on his recent History Master's thesis, veteran Seattle Times reporter and adjunct Western Washington University Journalism instructor Ron Judd examines the successful 1930s ‘Red Scare’ political campaign to remove Western Washington College of Education President Charles H. Fisher from office. Judd's presentation places Fisher's firing for the first time in the context of local and national anti-communist, "super-patriot" political trends. His study, based on archival research conducted in the collections of Heritage Resources, places Fisher squarely in the crossfire of a prolonged, bitter political war between New Deal liberals and old-guard conservatives in Bellingham, and examines whether the forced …

The most intriguing find in recently discovered documents about the firing of Charles H. Fisher from Western Washington College of Education, now Western Washington University, is the only known copy of a typed transcript of a remarkable, closed-door Board of Trustees meeting on May 22, 1935. That evening, Bellingham Herald manager and editor Frank Sefrit and a half-dozen other accusers met Fisher and the three-member college Board of Trustees face to face to lay out accusations against the popular president. The Golden Boy: An Examination Of Framing In National And Local News Coverage Of Jaylen Fryberg, Becca Freimuth

This framing analysis of national and local news coverage uses contextual analysis to examine how both print media and television media portrayed the 14-year-old shooter of the Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting. After the October 24, 2014 shooting in a town of roughly 63,000 people, news media began coverage almost instantly-- including national news media. This study adds to previous research done on mass murders because the recency of the shooting means the coverage has yet to be looked at with a critical eye. This study examines how Islam is covered in 18 large circulation U.S. newspapers and finds six frames that draw a nuanced picture of how Islam is framed in the news media. Two frames are negative, one is positive and three are neutral.

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

Having just arrived in Washington from my longtime Michigan home a few days before, the Backwards by Design retreat was the first formal activity of a new adventure on the faculty at Western Washington University. It was a great opportunity to get to know other faculty across departments. But, even more importantly, it was an open environment dedicated to fostering the creation student-centered learning environments. I learned many things — including a much more enthusiastic approach to using sticky notes to storyboard activities. I hope I was able to contribute as well.
