The study focuses on the Arabic desk of the French News Agency (APP) which is one of the main language desks of the international wire service that provides news in six languages. APP is the largest news provider in Arabic language to the media in the Middle East and North Africa.

Employing the techniques of a participant observation or ethnographic study, the work explores the constraints journalists face during the process of selecting, translating and editing the news.

The M/S Tampa in August 2001 was turned by the Australian government into a tool to fight the increasing numbers of boat people heading for Australia. But more importantly, it was a fight to win back votes before the upcoming federal election. Also in Norway an election was imminent, and even though the incident did not become an important part of the Norwegian election campaign, it played a role in Norway's involvement in the case. Re-Shaping Documentary Expectations: New Journalism And Direct Cinema, Sharon Lynne Zuber

New Journalism and Direct Cinema reflect a unique conjoined moment in the evolution of nonfiction writing and filmmaking in the United States. I argue that these movements developed as a specific response to the shift from a modern to a postmodern aesthetic, a shift away from faith in a coherent reality at a historical moment, the 1960s. Traditional wire service studies have focused on how international events are judged as newsworthy in newsrooms reluctant to devote space to overseas stories. Studies of framing in reports of the same events usually rely on articles by different journalists from different news groups. During the recent Iraq war, however, considerable space was allocated to an overseas event and Australian newspapers relied on articles transmitted by the same wires. Thus the war provides the opportunity not only to look at how Australian newspapers use wire copy but how that copy is framed. This thesis concentrates on instances where wire copy was …
