"I Don’T Even Deserve A Chance": An Ethnographic Study Of Adverse Childhood Experiences Among Male Perpetrators Of Intimate Partner Violence, Natalie Hoskins, Adrianne Kunkel

The Qualitative Report

Perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV) are more likely to have been exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACES) than the general population (e.g., Whitfield, Anda, Dube, & Felitti, 2003). Despite this association, occurrence of ACES does not necessarily lead to the development of patterned abusive behavior (Godbout et al., 2017). To understand the link between ACES and IPV perpetration, Godbout et al. (2017) suggest that research must consider a complex array of intra- and interpersonal experiences.
