Keepers Of The Peace Or Soldiers: An Analysis Of The 1983 Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing And The Rationale Behind Deploying Troops In A Peacekeeping Capacity, Brock Bellinger
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Despite President Reagan’s historic foreign policy success in ushering in the collapse of the Soviet Union and liberation of Eastern Europe, the loss of life during the Beirut Marine barracks bombing marks a substantial failure in Reagan’s foreign policy record. Reagan’s foreign policy failure in Beirut that resulted in the deaths of 241 Americans merits further examination amongst students of international relations as this peacekeeping mission illustrates the dangers of sending American troops into harm’s way without a clear and decisive goal and exit strategy. By evaluating the 1983 Beirut Marine barracks bombing, the hindsight and judgment of history allows …
Ambitions Of Chinese Hegemony: An Analysis Of The Hundred Year Marathon, Ruben E. Frivold
Ambitions Of Chinese Hegemony: An Analysis Of The Hundred Year Marathon, Ruben E. Frivold
Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy
Few national security threats challenge the magnitude posed by the People’s Republic of China toward the United States. This current reality is due to various factors, including Chinese persistence in implementing a grand strategy while facing minimal U.S. resistance due to various foreign policy missteps over the last half-century. China’s overarching approach to geopolitics has been a subject of much discussion and has often been referred to by experts as the ‘hundred-year marathon.’ The term derives its name from China’s objective of usurping America’s position as hegemon by 2049, a significant year that falls on the one-hundredth anniversary of the …

The Evolution Of The Artesh: 1980 To Present, Ryan Charles Touchstone
Masters Theses
Despite the large media coverage around Iran’s military actions, the role of the Artesh in Iran’s national security structure is often unmentioned. Looking at the evolution of the Artesh since the fall of the Shah of Iran, this study uses firsthand accounts, recent research, and governmental statements and reports to trace the Artesh’s journey to present day. It examines several battlefield successes and failures during the Iran-Iraq War to gauge the ability of the Artesh to adjust in a wartime environment. These adjustments are mixed with some valuable lessons being implemented to later battles while other important lessons remained unapplied. …
The Ineffectiveness Of The U.S. Strategy For Countering Terrorism In Iraq And Syria, Ann Mullins
The Ineffectiveness Of The U.S. Strategy For Countering Terrorism In Iraq And Syria, Ann Mullins
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
This research paper will explore the strategies of the U.S. when it comes to counterterrorism measures in the Middle East. It will also be exploring the aspects of the strategy that have been ineffective and counterproductive. The current U.S. Counterterrorism strategy in Iraq and Syria is counterproductive to its defined objectives in light of several fundamental elements: the significant U.S. military presence in the region, ineffectual U.S. security programs, and robust financial backing of ISIS by state sponsors of terrorism. The primary sources used throughout this research are listed the following: the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Department …

Middle Eastern Defense: The Role Of The Abraham Accords, Graciela H Phillipps
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
Defense organization in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region has been historically fraught with instability and conflict, rooted in tensions ranging from centuries-old religious disputes to modern geopolitical power struggles. However, two years ago deep-seated status quos in the area were challenged and successfully overcome through the drafting and signage of agreements in which Arab nations normalized ties with the nation of Israel, popularly known as the Abraham Accords. The Accords emphasized the mutual desire for peace and prosperity in MENA between signees with a pointed reference to maintaining security in the traditionally volatile region. These pivotal feats of …

Air Force Support For The Joint Military Environment: A Nato Allied Command Operations Headquarters Case Study, James R. Hamilton
Air Force Support For The Joint Military Environment: A Nato Allied Command Operations Headquarters Case Study, James R. Hamilton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The nature of joint and international military service is built on a foundation of multiple service components sending their best officers to support, develop, and strategize for operational impact. If leaders fail to support sending or training their officers in a joint context, then military defense may become myopic, stemming from an internal focus on air or land functionality instead of an external focus on joint air and land functionality. While several studies have highlighted the need for greater support in the joint officer community, there seemed to be other factors that contribute to senior leaders guiding absence of deliberate …

Cross-Cultural Managerial Behavior – A Comparative Study Between The Republic Of Korea And The United States Of America, Colson Richter
Cross-Cultural Managerial Behavior – A Comparative Study Between The Republic Of Korea And The United States Of America, Colson Richter
Senior Honors Theses
Among the many trade partners the United States engages with, the Republic of Korea is the nation’s seventh largest trading partner – exchanging over $154.9 Billion in 2020 (USTR, 2021). Despite this strong economic relationship between these two nations, the cultural distance that these societies have is one of the largest within anthropological academia (Hofstede, 2017). This reality creates the need for a solid framework of a management-focused, cultural understanding between these two countries.
In this study, academic literature will be collected and reviewed to lend insight into particular areas of culture that an American and Korean perspective would be …

Personal Touches: Translation Poetics In Chinese Translations Of Shakespeare Plays, Gabriella Smith
Personal Touches: Translation Poetics In Chinese Translations Of Shakespeare Plays, Gabriella Smith
Masters Theses
Translation, rather than a process of equivalency, requires linguistic and cultural mediation on behalf of the translator. Thought of in this way, the translation process becomes a process of rewriting to fit the sociolinguistic context, and the translator becomes the most important factor in determining how well a translation can fill in gaps present in the knowledge of the target audience. To provide a better understanding of how those with no training in translation seek to fit a translation to the linguistic audience they are provided, I conducted a study of two native bilingual Chinese students on the Wadsworth version …
