Fabianism Versus Welfareism : The Movement Towards The Welfare State In The United States, Susan Lee St. Clair Jan 1970

Fabianism Versus Welfareism : The Movement Towards The Welfare State In The United States, Susan Lee St. Clair

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Finally in the 1880’s there emerged a reformist group which was ultimately to be the model of the viability, adaptability, effectiveness, and success of evolutionary socialism. The group called itself the Fabian Society and in the beginning it seemed to be not unlike other protest or reformist groups which were springing up all over England at the time. The difference was that this group, though always small in numbers, was to have a tremendous impact throughout England and the rest of the democratic world. To be specific, the ideas of the Fabian Socialists can clearly be seen as influencing the …

A Study Of The United States-Korea Treaty Of 1882, Rai Won Pak

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study covers not only the cause of Korea’s entry into the world affairs with the United States in 1882, but also it is a study of modern power politics in the Far East, in which Korea played a significant role.

The importance of the Korea position in international affairs has been dimly treated by the Western World - yet, she is a nation populated by approximately thirty millions; the thirteenth largest nation in the world, and Koreans are the most homogenous people in the world; the nation, which is thrust down off the coast of Asia between the thirty-fifth …

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania Jan 1956

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The decline of British influence in world affairs is one of the more pronounced political phenomena of modern times. Over the past century key territories subject to British rule have been slipping loose from their imperial moorings at an ever more rapid rate. Those remaining subject to British authority grow progressively more belligerent.

In his search for an understanding or this eclipse or British sovereignty, the contemporary historian finds himself groping through a network of complexly interrelated social, political, economic, and psychological processes. One or another student or history has argued that specific instances or groups of these processes are …

Collective Security In The Pacific With Particular Reference To Seato, Eunuel Valdez Berbano Jan 1956

Collective Security In The Pacific With Particular Reference To Seato, Eunuel Valdez Berbano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Few terms are more popular today than “collective security,” and few are used with such diverse meanings.

Former Secretary of State Dean Acheson used the term no fewer than fourteen times in his address at the opening meeting of the Sixth Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations on September 20, 1950. And, of course, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles had as the main purpose in negotiating the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty “to establish a collective security arrangement for Southeast Asia and the Eastern pacific.”

To assess the true significance and possibilities of collective security in …

Cordell Hull And The Good Neighbor Policy, Mackey Wilbur Hill Jan 1953

Cordell Hull And The Good Neighbor Policy, Mackey Wilbur Hill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to trace in part Hull's role as implementer of the Good Neighbor policy particularly in the Western Hemisphere. Hull was an internationalist. His ultimate goal was to lead the way to a better world order that is built upon cooperation and mutual respect. This was the original meaning of the Good Neighbor policy as stated in Mr. Roosevelt's first inaugural address. It was the mood of good will and cooperation that was to characterize America's foreign relations. However, if nations outside of this hemisphere were to take America seriously and follow her example, …

A Study Of Hiram W. Johnson's Public Speaking Technique And Of His Speech Composition : As Manifested In Five Of His Speeches On United States Foreign Policy, Carl W. Fuller

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the third and fourth decades of the twentieth century Hiram W. Johnson was one of themost important men in Ameican public life. He attained his eminence through the power of the spoken wrod; as a master wielder of that power he is deserving subject for a study to which this thesis claim to be only the plodding and inept introduction.

This thesis does not pretend to be an exhaustive study of Johnson's methods for three reason: 1. Its analysis of Johnson's speech composition is restricted to the third of the developmental stages listed above; 2. speeches selected for analyisis …

Intervention Of The United States In Nicaragua Since 1909, Louise Floyd Jan 1927

Intervention Of The United States In Nicaragua Since 1909, Louise Floyd

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The twentieth century is revealing a steady increase in the influence of the United States in the Caribbean region, both in politics and economic development. The arm of America has been gradually forcing out the European nations. Counting colonies and protectorates, the United States has under its supervision a greater Caribbean population than the population of the thirteen colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence. In trade the United States is the best customer of Central America and the West Indies. The region is one of the chief sources of our raw-materials imports.

The majority of the citizens …
