Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The museum as an institution devoted to cultural preservation began to utilize social media as a medium of communication to the public. Some museums around the world since the early 2000s have used social media to create a new face or rebrand in giving an update to the public. Generally, the term for museums that utilize technology in practice, is called Museum 2.0. In this research, researchers aimed to explore Instagram content as a medium of historical education through qualitative content analysis. The formulation of the problem in this research is to know how the contents of the National Museum …

Public Health At The Public Library: Preventive Health Programs Implemented In Large Public Libraries, Uday Aj Patil

SLIS Connecting

Amid the opioid epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic, the public sector is consumed with health promotion and disease prevention. Preventive programs serve a significant purpose in ensuring population health and reducing burden on the healthcare system (Cohen et al., 2008; Neumann & Cohen, 2009). People are increasingly turning to educational resources outside of the traditional healthcare sector to ward off diseases or alleviate pre-existing conditions (Eakin et al., 1980; Eng et al., 1998). Public library systems often carry such resources, in print and multimedia form, at no cost. Some libraries are providing health programming to supplement, contextualize, or incentivize the use …

Rapid Shifts In Educators’ Perceptions Of Data Literacy Priorities, Kristin Fontichiaro, Melissa P. Johnston

Journal of Media Literacy Education

To meet the challenges of a data-driven society, high school students need new arrays of literacy skills. In the United States, school librarians, who work across disciplines, are well-positioned to help students improve their data practice, but they first need new domain knowledge. This article presents findings from an evaluating survey and session evaluation data from a virtual data literacy conference, which were part of a federally-funded project to develop data literacy skills among high school librarians and educators. Findings indicated a noticeable shift in participant perceptions of the need and urgency for data literacy instruction across content areas and …

Types Of Sources: Online Module For First Year Writing, Hannah Cabullo, Bekah Dreyer-Rowe Dec 2020

Types Of Sources: Online Module For First Year Writing, Hannah Cabullo, Bekah Dreyer-Rowe

New England Library Instruction Group

We created this Types of Sources module as one of four library modules for all sections of First Year Writing this fall. It is an asynchronous, online module delivered through Canvas, our institution’s learning management system, and consists of some reading, two short videos, and three discussion-board-based activities. The first activity, at the very beginning of the lesson, is intended to get students to start thinking about the characteristics of different types of sources. In the activity, students pick a type of resource (e.g. podcasts, scholarly journal articles, social media, etc.) from a list, answer some questions about it, and …

Mapping Out Your Research: From Topic Selection To A Thesis Statement, Alicia G. Vaandering, Lindsay Lachapelle

New England Library Instruction Group

Co-taught by an instruction librarian and a Writing Center coordinator, this lesson supports history students in exploring a topic and preparing for subsequent research and writing. The first and primary piece of this lesson centers on a topic speed dating activity that encourages students to look beyond the most obvious elements and narratives of their topic and seek nuance and unique perspectives through guided discussion with a peer. This is followed by a class discussion on the role that divergent thinking plays in developing a research question and some time for students to draft their own potential research question. Finally, …

Assessing The Potential For Critical Thinking Instruction In Information Literacy Online Learning Objects Using Best Practices, Mandi Goodsett

Communications in Information Literacy

Critical thinking, while often used as a mere buzzword, is clearly relevant to the mission and expertise of librarians who teach. Even in online information literacy instruction, critical thinking remains an important goal. This study attempts to determine the ways and extent to which online information literacy learning objects follow best practices for teaching and assessing critical thinking. In this study, the researcher evaluated a sample of information literacy online learning objects in the Association of College and Research Libraries repository of peer-reviewed instruction materials, PRIMO, using a literature-based rubric. The resulting analysis provides evidence of the extent to which …
