A comparison of two approaches to academic writing and research pedagogies demonstrates that, for Vyhmeister, truth is to be found outside and above us--it is a process of discovery, while Hamilton's approach focuses on the spiritual formation of the writer and can be understood as reflecting a process of spiritual growth. A third approach, which I develop in this article, views academic writing and theological inquiry as a ministry, in which the writer is served by and, in turn, serves the community of faith for the purpose of building a corporate knowledge of God.
