Poverty And Health Outcomes Among Hispanics In Massachusetts, Christopher Christian

The Hispanic population of Massachusetts is now close to becoming the largest ethnic minority group in the state. The 1990 statewide Census count found that the Hispanic population doubled in the past ten years and now comprises 4.8% of the total state population (287,349 residents) as compared to 2.5% in 1980.

Growth in the Hispanic population has not been coupled with advancements in health status. Hispanic residents are disproportionately affected by many adverse health outcomes, such as high infant mortality, a high incidence of substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, homicides, AIDS, and other chronic illnesses. Intimacy Outside Of The Natural Family: The Limits Of Privacy, Martha Albertson Fineman

In this paper I undertake a very pragmatic and focused consideration of whether it is possible to rework existing legal concepts of privacy in a way that would be ideologically compatible with dominant social norms in order to shield single mothers from excessive state regulation and supervision. I ultimately conclude that my desire to protect the decisionmaking autonomy and the dignity of poor and/or single mothers cannot be satisfied by resort to this area of law. At the constitutional level, this is so because notions of privacy are typically articulated as rights belonging to individuals, not family entities. And …

The term choice as it is used by the current administration with regard to education is a cosmetic, simplistic response to the failure of American schools. This Essay focuses on the construction of the concept of "Mother" in poverty discourses. It addresses the role of patriarchical ideology in the process whereby a characteristic typical of a group of welfare recipients has been selected and identified as constituting the cause as well as the effect of poverty. I am particularly interested in those political and professional discourses in which single Mother status is defined as one of the primary predictors of poverty. This association of characteristic with cause has fostered suggestions that an appropriate and fundamental goal of any proposed poverty program should be the eradication of …

Changes In The Black/White Income Ratio, 1939-87, Melvin Keys

The Black/white income ratio (BWIR) has increased steadily from 1939-87 for families with two incomes. Early-on, the income disparity was greatest for black females compared to black males. Because of race and sex discrimination, black females were lagging far behind society in wage differences. Today, the opposite is true, black males lag far behind black females in income: compared to their white counterparts. One of the reasons for such a large reversal in income differences maybe the opportunities that were available to black females in such occupations as teaching and nursing from 1940-75.
