Archaeological Photography: The United Kingdom, Madeline Scholten
Archaeological Photography: The United Kingdom, Madeline Scholten
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Archaeological photography is an interdisciplinary aspect of archaeological endeavors that is key in allowing archaeological finds to be accessible to a general audience. This facet is key in data collection and distribution within the field as it is to the general public.
Photography is something that people are exposed to, possibly even partaking in, on a daily basis, but photography goes a lot deeper than simply capturing a still image. The history of photography, and the ways photography has improved so many disciplines are things that are just as important as the camera itself, and yet not necessarily needed to …

Local Government Records Management: A Case Study Of Bellingham, Wa, Katherine Magee
Local Government Records Management: A Case Study Of Bellingham, Wa, Katherine Magee
WWU Graduate School Collection
While many authors have compiled guides and treatises on records management in general, employees of local governments such as counties and cities have a scarcity of sources to reference. Despite many local governments falling under the purview of their state archives or equivalent, specialized, practical guides in applying records management principles in today’s economic climate are crucial to the success of a local government’s records program. This thesis compares the writings of several authors on records management theory, including some writings specially tailored to local government records management. This comparison reveals similarities running throughout all the authors’ works, even in …

No File Left Behind: The Predicament Of Archival Appraising In The Digital Age, Jennifer M. Newby
WWU Graduate School Collection
Technology is continually changing. New advancements in technology allow records creators to employ a plethora of different mediums. Records created born-digitally are entering the archives, and archivists are challenged in appraising records that may be available only on outdated or unreadable software or hardware platforms. This thesis examines key issues regarding working with, especially appraising, born-digital materials in archival collections. The archival profession confronts inadequate education on technological challenges, a need to reexamine archival theories and methodologies regarding appraisal, and a general terror when it comes to working with born-digital material. Through use of interviews, this thesis explores the practical …

Undergraduate research (UR) programs attract highly motivated students who often continue on to graduate/professional schools but may lack necessary information literacy skills. Collaboration with UR programs provides librarians new opportunities to help students develop these skills and work with specialized collections in the context of a research experience. In this webinar, librarians and UR administrators share their experiences in forging collaborations based on UR and library training resources, explain how information literacy skills programming has been embedded into UR, and demonstrate how this partnership has led to greater visibility of library services, collections and UR among all undergraduates.

Open-Source Based Solutions For Processing, Preserving, And Presenting Oral Histories, Mark I. Greenberg, Barbara I. Lewis, Richard R. Bernardy Jr.
Mark I. Greenberg
For more than a decade, the University of South Florida Library's Oral History Program has sought to develop cost-effective, open-source solutions to improve workflow management, increase public access, and preserve oral history collections. Recently, it established two open-source solutions to meet these goals. Bull-OH-Base enables Oral History Program staff to manage its many oral history projects and associated data in a secure and efficient manner. OHPi (its oral history player interface) offers researchers the ability to access and search its collections through a web-based application that synchronizes audio and video files with a full-text transcript. USF continues to improve upon …

University Of South Florida Libraries Holocaust & Genocide Studies Draft Business Plan, Mark I. Greenberg
Mark I. Greenberg
Genocide and mass violence have become global threats to peace and security and a sad testament to the human condition. Almost a half million genocide and torture victims currently reside in the United States, with millions more suffering silently in other parts of the world. Recognizing an important opportunity to unify the University of South Florida’s wide-ranging Holocaust & genocide studies initiatives and to contribute to global education and action, the USF Libraries have created a global interdisciplinary center to better understand and prevent genocide. USF Libraries Holocaust & Genocide Studies Center will become an internationally recognized center for the …

Re-Greening The South And Southernizing The Rest, Mart A. Stewart
Re-Greening The South And Southernizing The Rest, Mart A. Stewart
History Faculty and Staff Publications
As the environmental history of the South is exposed and recovered, and historians explain more fully the intimate relationship between agriculture, agrarian and pastoral sensibilities, the history of slavery, and the physical environment of the South, we may discover that the South is instead out in front, waiting for the rest of America to catch up. Environmental historians of other regions in the United States, or indeed environmentalists in general who are seeking a usable past, may once again find a great deal to learn from historians of the South.

Cultivating Kudzu: The Soil Conservation Service And The Kudzu Distribution Program, Mart A. Stewart
Cultivating Kudzu: The Soil Conservation Service And The Kudzu Distribution Program, Mart A. Stewart
History Faculty and Staff Publications
Kudzu (Pueraria lobata; formerly jR thunbergiana) , which had been cultivated in Japan for centuries, made its appearance in the United States in 1876 at the Japanese pavilion at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and was introduced to southerners at the Japanese pavilion at the New Orleans Exposition of 1884-1886. Because of its luxuriant, rapid growth, broad and layered leaves, and lovely purple or magenta wisteria-like flowers, it soon gained popularity as a shade plant and became known as the "porch vine." By early in this century, some farmers were growing kudzu as a forage crop, mainly because of the indefatigable …

"Policies Of Nature And Vegetables": Hugh Anderson, The Georgia Experiment, And The Political Use Of Natural Philosophy, Mart A. Stewart
"Policies Of Nature And Vegetables": Hugh Anderson, The Georgia Experiment, And The Political Use Of Natural Philosophy, Mart A. Stewart
History Faculty and Staff Publications
In 1737, Hugh Anderson, a Scottish "gentleman" of "liberal education" who had come to the new colony of Georgia with his family two years earlier, joined his voice to those already complaining to the colony's governing body. In so doing, he also attacked the Trustees' plan for the colony and their land and labor regulations. Correspondence was the common medium in the eighteenth century for communication, for the diffusion of information, and for establishing, reinforcing, or questioning social, political, and economic relationships. Like the other colonists, Hugh Anderson used the letter of petition as a medium of protest. But Anderson's …
