The Effect Of Women’S Intrahousehold Bargaining Power On Child Health Outcomes In Bangladesh, Eleanor M. Schmidt
Undergraduate Economic Review
Trends in developing economies suggest that as relative female intrahousehold bargaining power improves, consumption preferences favor basic needs which promote child welfare. This study seeks to examine whether greater household bargaining power by Bangladeshi women is related to an improvement the health of their children. Results suggest that certain aspects of bargaining power, including female participation in decision-making about child health care, large household purchases and daily needs, are associated with larger child height-for-age z-scores. There exists a positive correlation between children in families where their mothers have decision-making authority and child health outcomes.

Agriculture operations benefit from the employment of Mexican immigrants through government programs that supply workers to the industry. Therefore, many crawfish farm operations in Louisiana employ both U.S. citizen and Mexican immigrant labor to operate efficiently. The purpose of this study was to compare selected characteristics of farm workers as well as to explore values related to education, as sorted by citizenship and ethnicity. The results of this study indicated significant differences in Mexican immigrant and Caucasian U.S. citizen crawfish farmers’ educational backgrounds and demographic characteristics, while finding that both groups held similar values about education. This investigation sprang from a yearlong immersion in post-conflict agricultural development environments in Herāt Province Afghanistan and from observing an array of NGO development projects. The purpose was to understand better the viewpoints of Afghan opinion leaders regarding the adoption–integration of foreign agricultural development. Objectives included (a) the identification of perceived strengths of foreign agricultural development, (b) perceived weaknesses, (c) opportunities, (d) threats, (e) anomalies, and (f)incentives and barriers. The case method fit the qualitative research design, and IRB approved the protocols. n 1994, as South Africa was transitioning out of the apartheid era, the new, democratically elected government was forced to confront a largely polarized agricultural sector. Colonial rule and apartheid policies had systematically dispossessed the African majority from land. At the end of apartheid, the white minority, comprising less than 10% of the population, controlled 87% of total agricultural land. To confront the harsh realities of food insecurity and poverty, South Africa’s post-apartheid democracy implemented land and agrarian reform policies. Biotechnology offers benefits, but few developing countries have approved genetically engineered (GE) crops. Extension educational programs could help prepare stakeholders in developing countries to influence biotechnology policies. Michigan State University (MSU) developed a two-week course that was taught 14 times from 2002 to 2010 for 251 participants from 58 developing countries. This course helped form an international network of biotechnology specialists who collaborate with stakeholders.

A simple random sampling technique was used to select 100 extension officers in North West Province, South Africa. Data on knowledge levels and perceived effect of ecosystem services and valuation on extension deliverywere collected and analyzed using percentages. Returns From Self-Employment: Using Human Capital Theory To Compare U.S. Natives And Immigrants, Nikola Popovic
Undergraduate Economic Review
The focus of this paper is to examine the economic returns from self-employment when comparing natives and immigrants. I hypothesize that returns from self-employment will increase with age and education, and that immigrants from China, India, and the Philippines will have higher returns while immigrants from Mexico will have lower returns than natives. I also hypothesize that immigrants with high levels of education will earn more than natives with the same amount of education. The OLS regressions show that human capital variables explain the differences in self-employed income between natives and immigrants, as the literature suggests.

This paper investigates the relationship between environmental quality and economic development through the use of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. The study will examine the effect of economic development on the environmental quality for selected high, middle and low income Latin American countries. The model will look at emission levels (CO2 emissions in metric tons per capita) in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia, Honduras and Nicaragua as affected by changes in Gross Domestic Product. The results show that there is an inverted U-shaped curve representing the relationship between environmental degradation (CO2 emissions per capita) and GDP per capita, supporting the EKC hypothesis.

Using state level discrimination coefficients, this paper looks to analyze why discrimination varies significantly across the United States. The empirical model is constructed using a panel data set over the past twenty years to develop a model that explains why variations in the level of gender discrimination faced by U.S. workers has persisted despite the fact that the level of gender discrimination has decreased over this period.

This paper will use an existing model from Amiti and Wei (2009) to illustrate the potentially positive effects that offshoring will have on the productivity of American IT workers and the IT industry. The inputs that will be used to measure productivity are labor, capital, materials, service inputs, and the offshoring of materials and services and were collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on a previous study from Amiti and Wei (2009), the results may suggest that there is a positive correlation from offshoring and productivity.

This paper examines the effect of changes in house prices on the saving patterns of households in the United States of America. The paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Three empirical models are run, one for 2009, one for 2005 and one for 1999 data, to account for differences in household income, age of the head of household, employment status, and mortgage information. The results indicate that whether the home is owned or rented has a significant impact on household savings in each year.

The authors discuss how Maine’s Sustainability Solutions Initiative (SSI) can contribute to economic development in the state. SSI research is covering five of the seven targeted technology areas identified in recent reports as being important for economic development in the state (forestry and agriculture, environmental, information, composites, marine and aquaculture). The authors note how the broad scope of research carried out through SSI provides opportunities to catalyze new commercial opportunities.
