Effects Of The Minimum Wage On U.S. Labor Markets, Dawn M. Otterby Aug 2023

Effects Of The Minimum Wage On U.S. Labor Markets, Dawn M. Otterby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first section of this research investigates the impacts of the minimum wage on regional labor markets in the United States. Using ten years of county-level data, we examine the relationship between the minimum wage and several key components of the labor market. Following past research, employment variables are used to measure labor supply, but—as an extension to the literature—job postings data are included to measure labor demand. Consistent with previous studies, we find a positive relationship between labor force participation and a county’s minimum wage. We do not find a statistically significant relationship between job postings and the minimum …

The Comedy Of Maine’S Commons: Private Ownership As Economic Development, Michael Cianchette Jan 2020

The Comedy Of Maine’S Commons: Private Ownership As Economic Development, Michael Cianchette

Maine Policy Review

In Maine, we have managed to avoid the tragedy of the commons in several arenas. One way we have supplanted tragedy with comedy is through supporting and respecting private ownership of property. Some of this support is by necessity, as areas that might be publicly owned in other states—such as our expansive forests—are predominately privately owned in Maine. Other times, it is through a recognition that the private sector supports responsible public investment and is willing to financially support it through increased tax revenue. As Maine prepares for its next 200 years, policymakers should take heed of these examples. Government …

Maine’S Changing Demographics: Implications For Workforce, Economy, And Policy, Amanda K. Rector Jan 2020

Maine’S Changing Demographics: Implications For Workforce, Economy, And Policy, Amanda K. Rector

Maine Policy Review

The fundamental purpose of any policy is to safeguard and improve the well-being of people. The understanding of any policy decision, therefore, must start with an understanding of demographics. This article reviews Maine’s demographics using data from the 1820 and 1920 censuses and comparing them to recent population estimates. The author finds trends that persist over time as well as ways in which Maine’s demographics have changed over the past 200 years. As 2019 ended and 2020 began, Maine saw its largest challenges as being related to the current demographic situation: slow population growth, limited available workforce, and increased demand …

Past, Present And Future Of Maine's Pulp And Paper Industry, Ariel Listo Aug 2018

Past, Present And Future Of Maine's Pulp And Paper Industry, Ariel Listo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pulp and paper industry has historically been of paramount importance for the state of Maine, both from cultural and economic perspectives. The industry has been a vital part of the forest products economy and a large contributor to employment and state gross domestic product (GDP). However, the number of pulp and paper mills in Maine has declined sharply in the last few decades, deeply harming employment levels, local economies and the forest products sector of the most heavily forested state in the nation. This phenomenon has sparked efforts to understand the factors behind the downfall of Maine's pulp and …

Impact Investing And Community Development, Ronald Phillips Jan 2016

Impact Investing And Community Development, Ronald Phillips

Maine Policy Review

The growing and worldwide practice called “impact investing”—investing capital for a social as well as financial return - is increasingly challenging private investors and managers of wealth, university endowments, mutual funds, foundations, pension funds, and individuals to direct capital in ways that contributes to the good of society. With roots in the 1960s civil rights era, the multi-billion dollar U.S. Community Development Corporations (CDCs) and Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) industry can serve as a major vehicle for impact investors. CDCs/CDFIs raise and deploy private and public capital to benefit marginalized populations and regions of the country aspiring for economic …
