Many economic development practitioners view cluster theory and analysis as constituting a general approach to strategy making in economic development, which may lead them to prioritize policy and planning interventions that cannot address the actual development challenges in their cities and regions. This paper discusses the distinction between strategy formation and strategic planning, where the latter is the programming of development strategies that are identified through a blend of experience, intuition, and analysis. Cluster theories and analytical tools can provide useful informational inputs into a strategy making effort and they can also be helpful for programming specific interventions (i.e., strategic …

This study describes the traditional relationship between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the incessant resource conflict witnessed in Kogi State, Nigeria and how it affects livelihood security of those involved and resource sustainability for the communities. In this paper, I will analysis the link between political ontology of exceptionalism and state in/security in the war on terror from a perspective which is based on Giorgio Agamben’s political-philosophical theory of “state of exception” and Foucauldian concept of governmentality”. Urbanization is a process that always initiates the continual transformation of land from one use to the other. Land transformation is presently being experienced in and around fast growing towns, like Anyigba in Kogi State. This study used Remote sensing and GIS techniques to identify, mark, and measure the extent of the various land uses from the Land use map of 1995 and Nigeriasat 1 imagery of 2006. An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Land Use/Cover Change On The Surface Temperature Of Lokoja Town, Nigeria, Olarewaju Oluseyi Ifatimehin

This research integrated remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identified land use/cover types in Lokoja, including their temporal transformation and association with surface temperatures from the LandSat TM and LandSat ETM imageries of 1987 and 2001 respectively. As the built-up area increased in size (2667.6%) so was the surface temperature (6.48oC), vacant land (872%: 9.65oC), cultivated land (104.4%: 1.2oC) and water bodies (64.3%:0.94oC) while vegetation cover increased by 2.44oC while its area extent decreased (316.7%). These changes were responsible for the rise in the mean surface temperature from 38.39oC in 1987 to 42.61oC in 2001, indicating a 4.22oC …

This study adopts ground survey and questionnaire administration to determine environmental and socio-economic factors contributing to malaria risk in Koton Karfe watershed catchment. A health facilty-based survey is carried out to assess tbe ratio of population to health facility. The study reveals that poverty is the overriding risk factor determining the high malaria incidence rate which ranges from 40/1000 per annum to 288/1000 per annum across watershed catchment and prevelant among infants and school age children. The nearest neighbour index of 1.48 suggests the randomness in the spatial distribution of health facilities. The increase in the burden of malaria on …

The floodplain wetlands (beels), extending over one lakh hectare, constitute the most important fishery resource of the Assam. The average productivity of Assam beels is 150-200 kg./ha/year. Many factors can be attributed for this situation, but inadequate auto stocking might be one of the basic reasons. To tide over this situation, rearing of seed in pens could be a viable alternative. This dissertation examines a significant yet little understood economic activity in modern Colombian history: cattle ranching. The importance of cattle stem from their role in the settlement of the country’s lowlands, the conflicts around property rights, and the proportion of capital dedicated to ranching. Because scholars have paid it little heed, most reproduce a common misconception about the logic of livestock: that it was principally driven by a range of ulterior motives – from satisfying cultural status to a source of political power; and from establishing territorial control to either a speculative investment or a hedge against risk – rather …

The range of stones cast by slings used in the past is debated. In the Central Andes, slings are asserted to be important weapons of prehispanic war, and have been recovered archaeologically. Rolled river cobbles and stones presumed to be slingstones found at fortified hilltop archaeological sites are presented as evidence that slings were used at these fortifications. Yet sling use has not been adequately tested at hillforts. Experiments conducted in Europe by a novice slinger have attempted to illuminate the range of sling cast stones at ancient hillforts. Fishery Regulation And New England's Local Economies: Preliminary Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Spencer Fleury Ph.D.

This paper examines the economic impacts of Amendment Five and Amendment Seven to the Northeast Multispecies Groundfish Management Plan on the economies of coastal cities and towns in southern New England, using a difference-in-differences OLS regression model and a Probit model. The potential existence of city-level economic impacts on fishing-related employment, average wages paid, median home values, and the unemployment rate was examined, with the object of providing guidance for policymakers involved in developing fisheries regulations. The results do not support the hypothesis that these regulations had a significant adverse effect on southern New England‘s coastal economies.
