Honors Thesis

As the prevalence of dating app usage continues to rise, it is imperative to explore the implications of their use, including the influence on long-term relationship formation. In this thesis, I explored whether the widespread use of dating apps amongst college students promotes long-term relationship formation. I also delved into college students’ motivations for using dating apps and whether they would want their dating app use to result in a relationship. One hundred students at the University of South Dakota were surveyed. Results indicated that 31% of respondents are current dating app users. Out of the participants who are single …

The Connection Of Personality & Love: The Enneagram & Chapman’S (1992) Five Love Language Model, Olivia M. Kliner

Selected Honors Theses

While love and personality can be complex ideas of human intrigue, many have attempted to more easily understand these concepts through typologies. This study explains popular typologies the Enneagram and Chapman’s (1992) Five Love Language model in detail, including discussion of its efficacy in self-discovery. The present study seeks to answer the following: To what extent are participants’ love language and Enneagram type associated? Though several associations were flagged for moderate significance, the overall association between love language and Enneagram type was statistically insignificant ( p<.05 ; x2=36.978 ; p=.25). However, the most significant association found was between love language and college major. Recommendations for further research are provided.

“I know I am not the typical guy,” Marco told me in therapy. “I love snuggles and touches with Julianne, and I don’t need to go further.” Juli said she was open to affection, but wasn’t big into “touching just for the heck of it.” Marco had a painful history of divorce and betrayal, and he liked the reassurance from their connection. “He always wants me to sit with him on the couch and drink cocoa,” Juli laughed, “and watch Disney movies.”

Looking At The Marital Horizons Of Emerging Adults Through The Lens Of Identity Formation, Dallin Alexander Belt

Theses and Dissertations

Seventy years ago Erikson proposed successful identity formation in adolescence was the foundation for successful intimacy formation in young adulthood. With the extended period of identity exploration in emerging adulthood, it is unclear if intimacy formation continues to be connected to identity. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between identity in three domains of love, work, and worldview with long term views of intimacy using Marital Horizons Theory. Results from a sample of 777 college students in the Project READY dataset indicated that identity formation in love is positively associated with views of marriage, identity formation …

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore how fathering sons impacts men's relational growth and development. How parents view the nature of a child and their own role as parents has great influence over the life of that child. Many perspectives about the nature of children have arisen in the course of Western Civilization that have shaped childrearing practices for centuries, including the increasingly accepted scholarly view that parents matter relatively little in children’s lives. (2) This chapter emphasizes inspired, eternal principles that are supported by empirical and conceptual scholarship, which suggests that optimal parenting does indeed matter in children’s lives.
