Blending Borders: Transboundary Protected Areas And Their Role In An Intersectional Future, Alexandra Rogalinski
Blending Borders: Transboundary Protected Areas And Their Role In An Intersectional Future, Alexandra Rogalinski
Senior Projects Spring 2022
Protected areas serve the vital role of designating spaces worthy of protection from and for human use. Transboundary protected areas are especially useful in thinking about the interconnected nature of the relationship between human societies and ecological systems as the latter, despite not conforming to the former, are managed as though they did. By learning from frameworks developed specifically for the two in tandem, systems can adapt to different locales and communities world-wide and build resilience in place for the future in which resilience will most assuredly be needed.
Transboundary Marine Management In The Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, Lindsey G. Ellett
Transboundary Marine Management In The Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, Lindsey G. Ellett
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Transboundary conservation aims to facilitate environmental conservation and management at the ecosystem level by operating across political boundaries, through the cooperation of two or more countries. Though there is increased interest and advocation for transboundary conservation initiatives around the world, there remains a limited understanding of how they function on-the-ground. Within this study, I address these gaps in knowledge through two phases of research, both focusing on the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape as a case study site. Phase I involved a policy analysis of Indonesian, Malaysia, and Philippine policies related to fisheries, coastal zones and protected areas, and environmental quality. Through this …
The Politicization Of Water: Transboundary Water-Conflict In The Indian Subcontinent, Ananya Gupta
The Politicization Of Water: Transboundary Water-Conflict In The Indian Subcontinent, Ananya Gupta
Honors Papers
The Himalaya-Hindu Kush mountain range and the Tibetan Plateau birth ten of Asia’s most prominent rivers providing irrigation, energy, and drinking water to over two billion people across several countries today. Therefore, transboundary water sharing is a constant source of conflict for several South Asian countries that rely on rivers to support their primarily agrarian economies.
In recent years, climate change has drastically increased global temperatures. As a result, the Indian subcontinent has been plagued with extreme riverine flood and drought events.
Climate change-related events like riverine floods and drought, exacerbate the politicization of conflict between nations that share natural …
Global And Regional Perspectives On Large-Landscape And Transboundary Conservation, Sanober R. Mirza
Global And Regional Perspectives On Large-Landscape And Transboundary Conservation, Sanober R. Mirza
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
With the growing pressure of environmental degradation and exploitation to social and ecological landscapes around the world, conservationists are looking for new approaches to address the complex nature of transboundary issues. Large-landscape conservation supports conservation and management of ecosystems, wildlife, and resources in a more holistic approach that extends beyond protected area boundaries. Transboundary conservation, a distinct form of large-landscape conservation, operates across political and spatial scales by involving two or more countries cooperating to protect a border resource or ecosystem. Though the recognition of large-landscape and transboundary conservation is growing, there is limited understanding of trends across these types …

Implementation of conservation and development in the Amazon borderlands requires effective transboundary coordination. Updated, readily understandable, and transboundary cartography becomes increasingly essential in Southwestern Amazonia as residents and decision makers attempt to mitigate the socio-environmental challenges and impacts in the borderlands. The lack of updated borderland cartography complicates the planning of development, integration, and conservation projects at a variety of different scales. The Transboundary Geographic Group of Southwestern Amazonia (GTASO) has created a network to continuously exchange geographic information, resulting in a June 2013 workshop and the creation of five transboundary thematic maps of the Amazon regions of Ucayali and …
A Species-Based Approach To Transboundary Marine Conservation In The Caribbean Region, Carolyn Doherty
A Species-Based Approach To Transboundary Marine Conservation In The Caribbean Region, Carolyn Doherty
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
The basic theory of peace parks is applied to transboundary marine environments in this paper. Emphasizing connections across different scales, the ultimate goal of this paper is to resolve a specific ecological conflict: international conservation of migratory marine species in the Caribbean region. Migratory marine species like the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) create a unique dilemma for conservationists. Migratory species require diverse eco-regions for different stages of essential life processes. In the Caribbean region, these life processes occur regardless of political and economic boundaries, creating a predicament for marine conservation. Linking marine turtle harvest and conservation laws of the nations …
The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Joshua Flynn
The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Joshua Flynn
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
The concept of a peace park is one that goes back more than seventy-five years with the creation of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park at the border between Montana and Alberta. The park was originally viewed as a symbol of friendship and goodwill but over the years has become an example of a successful transboundary wilderness park. The park thrives due to high levels of cooperation and collaboration between all stakeholders involved, including those involved in the Crown Managers Partnership. The park has survived amidst threats to its sovereignty. The biggest challenge the park and its managers have faced is …
The Positive And Negative Impacts Of Transboundary Protected Areas On The Environment And The Social Makeup Of A Region, Kelsey Rdzanek
The Positive And Negative Impacts Of Transboundary Protected Areas On The Environment And The Social Makeup Of A Region, Kelsey Rdzanek
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
A Transboundary Protected Area (TBPA) is an area of land and/or sea that crosses one or more borders, whose area is dedicated to the protection of biological diversity and resources, and managed cooperatively by government, local communities and non-governmental organizations. This type of protected area is a fairly new concept that has not had much research conducted on whether or not it achieves the goals it has set out to meet. This paper will focus on the positive and negative impacts of TBPA’s on the environment and the social makeup of a region. TBPA’s do a great job of increasing …
