Waste generation in the United States is at an all time high. Over half of the country’s waste goes to landfill, yet 70 percent of this waste can be recycled or composted. Since landfills pose one of the largest manmade threats to the environment, sustainable waste management strategies should focus on landfill diversion. A successful waste recovery program needs to engage the public, and ensure individuals participate correctly in available waste management systems. As disaster risk increases across the globe a growing attention has been placed on how disasters and emergencies impact children and youth’s access to education. International humanitarian agencies, national governments, non-governmental organization, researchers, practitioners, and advocates have coalesced to identify strategies to address school safety in the presence of disaster risk. The Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) framework developed out of this movement. CSS aims to protect students and educators from physical harm, plans for the continuity of education, safe safeguards investments, and incorporates resilience topics into curriculum. The purpose of this work is to explore the current children’s literature that represents and presents lived experiences of underrepresented peoples within North America. Narratives in children's literature are historically homogenous in themes rooted in dominant colonial culture. This can be problematic with regards to supporting the diversity, equity, and inclusion of all people, in and out of educational settings.

Using myself as a site of study, I examined the sensations and current state of my mixed racial identity. In addition, I have collected and reviewed currently available children’s literature as a point of inspiration to write my own story. …
