Cultural Traditions And The Treatment Of Freeriders, Christina Pomianek Ph.D., Craig T. Palmer Ph.D., Reed L. Wadley Ph.D., Katherine Coe Ph.D. Nov 2011

Cultural Traditions And The Treatment Of Freeriders, Christina Pomianek Ph.D., Craig T. Palmer Ph.D., Reed L. Wadley Ph.D., Katherine Coe Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Evolutionary approaches to the explanation of human behavior are often employed in hypotheses about the toleration and punishment of freeriders. Despite the explanatory potential of evolutionary perspectives, many such perspectives ignore the unique human factor that has influenced the economic, social, and political contexts within which, up until very recently in human existence, reactions to freeriding always occurred. This human factor is the role of cultural traditions (i.e., behaviors passed down from ancestors to descendants). Cultural traditions necessarily play an important role in identifying, defining, preventing, and determining the treatment of freeriders because many traditional moral codes apply specifically to …

Neoliberal Dispositif And The Rise Of Fundamentalism: The Case Of Pakistan, Masood Ashraf Raja Ph.D. Nov 2011

Neoliberal Dispositif And The Rise Of Fundamentalism: The Case Of Pakistan, Masood Ashraf Raja Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

While developmental theorists rely heavily on analysis of macro and micro economic theories and developmental sequencing, not much attention is paid to the undeniable linkage between the post-seventies liberalization of global economies and the rise of different kinds of religious fundamentalism. This article suggests that there is a strong connection between neoliberal economics and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. The rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Pakistan can be directly linked to the insertion of performative religious acts, predominantly Islamic, into the national public sphere during the rule of Zia-ul-Haq. Since that time, the public sphere in Pakistan has been increasingly …

Current Economic Situation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Goran Mirascic Ph.D. Nov 2011

Current Economic Situation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Goran Mirascic Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article provides an overview of the current economic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Beginning in the second half of 2008, macroeconomic conditions in B&H began precipitating a decline in economic activity. While the global financial crisis was among the factors contributing to this decline, it was far from the only factor. Problematic macroeconomic conditions were also a result of B&H’s own structural and political problems, caused largely by the shortcomings of a political entity comprising two autonomous entities. Due to such problems, the governments of B&H turned to the International Monetary Fund for assistance. This article analyzes the effects …

Martin Parr In Mexico: Does Photographic Style Translate?, Timothy R. Gleason Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This study analyzes Martin Parr’s 2006 photobook, Mexico. Parr is a British documentary photographer best known for a direct photographic style that reflects upon “Englishness.” Mexico is his attempt to understand this foreign country via his camera. Mexico, as a research subject, is not a problem to solve but an opportunity to understand a photographer’s work. Parr’s Mexico photography (technique, photographic content, and interest in globalization, economics, and culture) is compared to his previous work to explain how Parr uses fashion and icons to represent a culture or class. This article argues Parr’s primary subjects, heads/hats, food, and Christs, are …

Modeling Of Sediment Transport In Mae Tao Creek, Tak Province, Thailand, Wunvisa Tharathammathigorn, Pichet Chaiwiwatworakul Jul 2011

Modeling Of Sediment Transport In Mae Tao Creek, Tak Province, Thailand, Wunvisa Tharathammathigorn, Pichet Chaiwiwatworakul

Applied Environmental Research

This research focused on the bed sediment transport during wet season in Mae Tao Creek, Mae Sot District, Tak Province. Sediment was the main source of cadmium transport in Mae Tao Creek. MIKE 11 was used to model the channel flow and bed sediment transport. The model was run in hydrodynamic (HD) and sediment transport module (ST). Time series of water depth from May to October were used to calibrate the hydrodynamics of the creek. The reliability of hydrodynamic results was evaluated based on the correlation coefficient (CC) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The CC and RMSE obtained during …

Feasibility Study For Make-Up Water Quality For Cooling Tower By Electro-Coacgulation Process, Sasipim Manasilp, Cattaleeya Pattamaprom Jul 2011

Feasibility Study For Make-Up Water Quality For Cooling Tower By Electro-Coacgulation Process, Sasipim Manasilp, Cattaleeya Pattamaprom

Applied Environmental Research

Cooling tower was a type of heat transfer equipment which was used to enhance heat rejection to the environment by increasing the surface contact between water and air. Water used in the cooling tower system had to be pretreated to prevent scaling and corrosion. As most factories in the northern part of Bangkok utilized both tap water and groundwater, which was known to contain large amount of minerals and suspended solids, water pretreatment was crucial before entering cooling towers or the heat-exchanging systems. Typical water pretreatment system consisted of sand filtration, carbon adsorption and ion-exchange resin adsorption to remove particles …

Efficiency Of Triple Superphosphate Fertilizer To Stabilize Cadmium In Different Soil Texture Characteristics, Chatchavaporn Yingsombat, Usarat Thawornchaisit Jul 2011

Efficiency Of Triple Superphosphate Fertilizer To Stabilize Cadmium In Different Soil Texture Characteristics, Chatchavaporn Yingsombat, Usarat Thawornchaisit

Applied Environmental Research

This research investigated the effectiveness of Triple Superphosphate (TSP) as a stabilizing agent for cadmium (Cd) in three representative soils having different texture characteristics (loamy-sand, clay loam, and clay soils). Results showed that addition of TSP proved to be an effective method for reduction of Cd leachability in all Cd contaminated soils. The partitioning of Cd from the potentially available phase to the more stable phase was observed in all TSP treatments based on the sequential extraction data. Moreover, performance of TSP to immobilize Cd depended on soil types and compositions. The effectiveness of TSP to reduce Cd leachability was …

Effects Of Ferrocene On The Solubilization Of Alkanes In A Microemulsion System, Saravanee Singtong, Chantra Tongcumpou, David A. Sabatini Jul 2011

Effects Of Ferrocene On The Solubilization Of Alkanes In A Microemulsion System, Saravanee Singtong, Chantra Tongcumpou, David A. Sabatini

Applied Environmental Research

Ferrocene is a metallic additive that has been used to boost the octane number of gasoline. Even though ferrocene is not an environmental contaminant of high concern, it can be found in soil contaminated with gasoline. Due to its organometallic nature, ferrocene may affect the phase behavior of other alkanes which has been contaminated to the environment and limit their removal using surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR). Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the effects of ferrocene on the solubilization capacity of alkanes in micellar surfactant solutions. The solubilization capacity and column study of alkanes with and without …
