The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau plays an important role as an ecological security barrier for China and the world, where the ecological environment has generally improved in recent years. Nevertheless, the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau still faces management challenges in dealing with the three relationships, namely, key problems and coordinated governance, natural recovery and artificial restoration, and high-quality development and high-level protection. Achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by United Nations is a critical task for countries around the world from 2016 to 2030. Yet, recent assessments indicate that progress on half of the SDGs has stagnated or even regressed, and that most goals are unlikely to be met by 2030. After nearly 20 years of development, the Yulong Snow Mountain National Field Observation and Research Station for Cryosphere and Sustainable Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences has built a field comprehensive observation system and data online visualization platform of temperate glacier and environment integrating observation, research, demonstration, and service. Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) Program is a 10-year international science program initiated by International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), International Social Sciences Council (ISSC), and United Nations Office International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). In 2009, International Programme Office (IPO) of IRDR Program successfully applied by China Association for Science and Technology in Beijing, became the first office of ICSU Interdisciplinary Body hosted in Asia.
