Measuring The Degree Of Central Bank Independence In Egypt, Noha Aboubakr Farrag Feb 2006

Measuring The Degree Of Central Bank Independence In Egypt, Noha Aboubakr Farrag

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The past few years have witnessed a trend of increased delegation of authority to central banks. Increasing central bank independence is a recommended strategy for governments to establish a credible commitment to price stability as the final objective of the monetary authority, even at the cost of other objectives that may be more appealing to the political authorities. Existing literature on measuring central bank independence focuses on developed countries where quantifying the independence of central banks is easier, since quantifying the legal charter is sufficient to reflect the degree of central bank independence. However, in developing countries this task is …

The Marble Industry In Egypt: A Microeconomic Analysis, Azza Ibrahim Hamed Kandil

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a microeconomic assessment of the marble industry in Egypt. It starts with an overview and analysis of the international marble industry, highlighting this industry as one of the oldest industries in the world. Historically, the industry moved from laborintensive to capital-intensive with the advent of technological advancement, including development of automated production tools like cranes and diamond cutting wires. In Egypt, during the past 20 years, market entry into the industry was high, due to the high profit margins achieved. In addition, there was (and still is) lack of effective government regulation. Currently, the marble industry in …

Egypt's External Debt: An Attempt To Apply Sargent-Wallace Model To Egypt, Ashraf Mahmoud Abdel Moneim

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This research will analyze the Egyptian external debt, and its effect on the budget deficit and how the external debt could be rolled. We will see the government's policies, and how it affected the economy. The Gulf War had its effect in rescheduling and canceling some debt. Alternatives of deficit financing to prevent borrowing will be discussed. Thomas Sargent and Neil Wallace have introduced a model by which the government can meet its debt problem. Sargent and Wallace gave a solution to the problem of debt financing by printing money. This method is called "money financing." We will apply this …

Different Approaches To Modelling The Monetary Demand Function For Egypt, With Particular Stress On The Money-Income Relationship, Srdja Ivekovic

Archived Theses and Dissertations

In this paper we attempt to construct a money demand function for Egypt, as determined by income, interest rate and inflation. The exercise was performed on quarterly data (1980:4 to 1996:4), but since a representative activity variable is not available at any frequency higher than annual, we had to generate quarterly GDP series assuming an ARIMA process. DF and ADF tests for stationarity and the ratio-to-moving average test for seasonality were pe1formed, while the HEGY procedure was used to confirm the results of the simpler procedures. The series were found to be 1(1) and there was no evidence of deterministic …

This case study describes and analyzes the failure of the orange exports in Egypt since 1884 until 1966/67. It also evaluates the recent growth in Egyptian orange exports from 1967/68 to 1970/71. Part I describes the Egyptian orange production, consumption and exports from 1884 to the present. It focuses on an exploratory study of 1966/67 orange export season, which provides an ideal example of the failure of orange exports in Egypt from 1884 until 1966/67.
