There are forty-two independent telephone companies and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia currently providing telephone services throughout the State of Virginia. The general goal of this study is to establish the economic nature and significance of the telephone industry on the State of Virginia. The basic function of this industry is to provide an increasingly vital service - communications within and between areas of the State, The United States, and foreign countries.
