Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette Dec 2011

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

Since 2006, there has been ongoing research into the correlation of a set of oscillating mood factors and socioeconomic, geopolitical, and natural events with the goal of forecasting increased risks of destabilizing events. While promising results have been forthcoming, it has been difficult to present models that allowed those outside a small circle of specialists to participate. Between July 2007 and June 2010, weekly social mood projections, as published in monthly issues of MoodCompass, were used to develop a model to convert four oscillating mood factors into stock market expectations. This model was modified to generate signals of projected stock …

Current Research Projects Of The Public Health Pbrn Program, Glen P. Mays Dec 2011

Current Research Projects Of The Public Health Pbrn Program, Glen P. Mays

Glen Mays

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks Program supports research on the organization, financing, and delivery of public health services using the infrastructure of practice-based networks (PBRNs). A Public Health PBRN brings multiple public health agencies into collaboration with an academic research partner to design and conduct studies in real-world practice settings. The program supports research through several different mechanisms, including (1) large-scale Research Implementation Awards (RIAs) conducted by established networks; (2) Quick-Strike Research Fund (QSRF) awards that support short-term, time-sensitive studies on emerging issues; and (3) supplemental Research Acceleration and Capacity Expansion (RACE) awards designed to …

Driving Qi With Research: Findings From Public Health Pbrns, Glen Mays

Glen Mays

Public health agencies are increasingly experimenting with quality improvement (QI) strategies designed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of their efforts. Does QI work in public health, and if so for whom and under what circumstances? What QI strategies work best for which types of public health process failures, and at what cost? Research underway through the Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRN) Program is examining these types of questions to build an evidence base for public health QI.

A Counterfactual Decomposition Analysis Of Immigrants-Natives Earnings In Malaysia. Economics Discussion Papers, No 2011-51, Muhammad Anees Dec 2011

A Counterfactual Decomposition Analysis Of Immigrants-Natives Earnings In Malaysia. Economics Discussion Papers, No 2011-51, Muhammad Anees

Muhammad Anees

Economics of discrimination has been the topic of interest of many in the last decade or two. Human capital theory describes wage determination as a function of labour human capital and should be determined based on marginal productivity theorem of labour economics. Islamic theology also dictates paying labour well in time and equal to their productivity not based on his colour, race, gender, nationality health status and other non-economic factors. The current study analyses the immigrants-natives wage gap to find the extent of potential discrimination against the immigrants. Using employees’ level data from the Enterprise Surveys by the World Bank …

Similarities In Fan Preferences For Minor-League Baseball Across The American Southeast, Tyler Anthony, Tim Kahn, Briana Madison, Rodney Paul, Andrew Weinbach Dec 2011

Similarities In Fan Preferences For Minor-League Baseball Across The American Southeast, Tyler Anthony, Tim Kahn, Briana Madison, Rodney Paul, Andrew Weinbach

Rodney J. Paul

Three Minor League Baseball leagues across the Southeastern United States are studied in order to determine what drives fan attendance. Individual game attendance and game characteristics are examined for three leagues located in the American southeast, the Florida State League, the Southern League, and the South Atlantic League. Despite the three leagues encompassing different levels of play (from A to AA), the determinants of attendance are similar across leagues. Factors affecting attendance such as winning percentage, weather conditions, local income and population, and individual game promotions, such as fireworks, are explored.

Eplaining The Performance Of Italian Exports During The Crisis: (Medium) Quality Matters, Claudio Vicarelli, Piero Esposito Dec 2011

Eplaining The Performance Of Italian Exports During The Crisis: (Medium) Quality Matters, Claudio Vicarelli, Piero Esposito

Claudio Vicarelli

A recent study argues that the contraction in total trade that occurred during the crisis was mainly driven by the fall in high quality goods, which should have higher income elasticity owing to a non-linear Engel curve. Our aims are, on the one hand, to test the quality Engel curve assumption for EU15 imports from Italy and, on the other hand, to ascertain whether a break in income elasticities – either temporary or permanent – occurred during the global financial crisis as a result of the changing preference for quality of consumers in the old EU member states. We test …

Warfare, Taxation, And Political Change: Evidence From The Italian Risorgimento, Mark Dincecco, Giovanni Federico, Andrea Vindigni Dec 2011

Warfare, Taxation, And Political Change: Evidence From The Italian Risorgimento, Mark Dincecco, Giovanni Federico, Andrea Vindigni

Andrea Vindigni

We examine the relationships between warfare, taxation, and political change in the context of the political unification of the Italian peninsula. Using a comprehensive new database, we argue that external and internal threat environments had significant implications for the demand for military strength, which in turn had important ramifications for fiscal policy and the likelihood of constitutional reform and related improvements in the provision of non-military public services. Our analytic narrative complements recent theoretical and econometric works about state capacity. By emphasizing public finances, we also uncover novel insights about the forces underlying state formation in Italy.

The Oecd And Phases In The International Political Economy, 1961-2011, Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes Dec 2011

The Oecd And Phases In The International Political Economy, 1961-2011, Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes

Judith Clifton

In 2011, the OECD turned fifty. To provide a broad foundation for further thinking on this organization, we analyse its evolution over half a century from two perspectives: phases in the international political economy and the literature on IPE. By so doing, we uncover two paradoxes. Firstly, we find that the organization’s evolution closely mirrored major phases in the postwar international political economy until recently. However, the OECD’s long-term dependence on theWest has now become an obstacle to its efforts to adapt to the latest phase, characterised by the rise of non-Western powers. Secondly, we show that, during the OECD’s …

Study On The Anti-Competitive Enforcement Of Intellectual Property Rights: Sham Litigation, Lucia Helena Salgado, Denis B. Barbosa, Graziela F. Zucoloto Dec 2011

Study On The Anti-Competitive Enforcement Of Intellectual Property Rights: Sham Litigation, Lucia Helena Salgado, Denis B. Barbosa, Graziela F. Zucoloto

Lucia Helena Salgado

1. The objective of this study was to trace a worldwide frame of the current state of the anticompetitive use of judicial actions in defense of intellectual property, also known as Sham Litigation. Sham litigation has been object of controversy, as it opposes connects the exercise of allegedly legitimate rights to the idea of abuse on its uses, meaning (in economic terms) a strategic use with the objective of harming or excluding a rival from the market. A good and pioneer possible tentative definition for sham litigation in on a strict economic perspective is a predatory or fraudulent litigation with …

Toolkit And Guidance For Preventing And Managing Land And Natural Resources Conflict: Conflict Prevention In Resource-Rich Economies, Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng

Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng

Natural resource exports such as oil, diamonds and copper provide opportunities to drive growth and human development. However, extraction of these commodities can also result in slow growth, poverty and conflict. This paper focuses on four questions. First, how does natural resource dependence impede economic and social progress? Second, how does lack of economic and social progress translate into violent conflict? Third, which economic policies lessen the risk of conflict? Fourth, what are the programmatic implications for UNDP?

By synthesizing country cases, this paper shows that resource-based countries face a higher risk of experiencing violent conflict because of increases in …

Entry Regulation And Business Start-Ups: Evidence From Mexico, David S. Kaplan, Eduardo Piedra, Enrique Seira Dec 2011

Entry Regulation And Business Start-Ups: Evidence From Mexico, David S. Kaplan, Eduardo Piedra, Enrique Seira

David S. Kaplan

We estimate the effect on business start-ups of a program that significantly speeds up firm registration procedures. The program was implemented in Mexico in different municipalities at different dates. Our estimates suggest that new start-ups increased by about 5% per month in eligible industries, and we present evidence supporting robustness and a causal effect interpretation. Most of the effect is temporary, concentrated in the first 15 months after implementation. The estimated effect is much smaller than World Bank and Mexican authorities claim it is, which suggests attention in business deregulation may be over emphasized.

Overview Of The Public Health Pbrn Program, Glen Mays

Glen Mays

The Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks Program is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that supports the development of research networks for studying the comparative effectiveness, efficiency and equity of public health strategies deployed in real-world practice settings. A practice-based research network (PBRN) brings multiple public health agencies together with research partners to design and implement studies of population-based strategies that prevent disease and injury and promote health. Participating practitioners and researchers collaborate to identify pressing research questions of interest, design rigorous and relevant studies, execute research effectively, and translate findings rapidly into practice. As such, PBRNs …

Determinants Of Chilean Youth Voter Registration: Evidence For The Biobio Region, Andres A. Acuña Nov 2011

Determinants Of Chilean Youth Voter Registration: Evidence For The Biobio Region, Andres A. Acuña

Andres A. Acuña

Youth voter registration is a worldwide phenomenon that exhibits a marked decline over the last two decades. On this basis, this paper presents evidence regarding those factors that determine the voter registration of Chilean youth, in particular, the inhabitants of Biobio region. In addition, it presents a microeconomic model for the voter registration decision, which enables to derive an empirical expression that can be estimated and tested. This empirical expression is coherent with the model proposed by Silberman and Durden (1975), which considers a relationship between voter registration and several social/economic variables. The model is estimated using a dynamic panel …

Real Sdr Currency Board, Warren Coats Nov 2011

Real Sdr Currency Board, Warren Coats

Warren Coats

An enhanced special drawing right (SDR), valued by a basket of goods, would provide the global currency and reserve asset the global economy craves. This paper proposes linking the value of the International Monetary Fund’s SDR and national currencies that fix their exchange rates to the SDR to a representative basket of widely traded goods. The new “real SDR” would be issued and redeemed passively according to “Currency Board” rules in exchange for financial assets with the same market value as the basket. National currencies and/or an international reserve currency with the same value (i.e. fixed to a common unit …

Estimating The Value Of Public Health Services & Systems: Evidence, Uncertainties, And Research Needs, Glen Mays

Glen Mays

The Affordable Care Act authorized the largest expansion in federal funding for public health services and delivery systems in decades. These provisions, designed to support programs and services that promote health and prevent disease and injury on a population-wide basis, remain controversial because of uncertainties regarding their effectiveness in improving health and constraining medical cost growth. This session examines a series of recent studies to shed light on the health and economic value of spending on public health.

Public health agencies are well positioned within the health system to play key roles in addressing oral health issues on a population-wide basis, However, current evidence reveals wide geographic variation in the delivery of public health interventions for oral health promotion. This session explores the factors contributing to this variation, and it highlights studies underway through the Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRNs) to produce more and better evidence about public health delivery and impact.

Overconfidence And Moral Hazard, Leonidas E. De La Rosa Nov 2011

Overconfidence And Moral Hazard, Leonidas E. De La Rosa

Leonidas Enrique de la Rosa

In this paper, I study the effects of overconfidence on incentive contracts in a moral-hazard framework. Agent overconfidence can have conflicting effects on the equilibrium contract. On the one hand, an optimistic or overconfident agent disproportionately values success-contingent payments, and thus prefers higher-powered incentives. On the other hand, if the agent overestimates the extent to which his actions affect outcomes, lower-powered incentives are sufficient to induce any given effort level. If the agent is moderately overconfident, the latter effect dominates. Because the agent bears less risk in this case, there are efficiency gains stemming from his overconfidence. If the agent …

This article critically examines aspects of the recent decision in the Act of Concentration that has approved with restrictions the purchase of Sadia by Perdigão, upholding the Brasil Foods creation – and its unfolding. During the decision-making process in CADE, was sometimes mentioned as being an applicable precedent decision of CADE who approved the Act of concentration on the buying of the Kolynos by Colgate, in 9/18/1996. The goal of this article is twofold: point technical fails in the decision-making process and on the merits of the case Sadia-Perdigão; and demystify any possible association between this and the case Colgate-Kolynos.

What Gets Measured Gets Done: Stop Focusing On Irrelevant Broadband Metrics, Scott J. Wallsten Nov 2011

What Gets Measured Gets Done: Stop Focusing On Irrelevant Broadband Metrics, Scott J. Wallsten

Scott J. Wallsten

Concerns regarding the state of U.S. broadband arises from a combination of focusing on the wrong metrics, a misguided interpretation of consumer preferences, and a popular obsession with rankings. These misperceptions translate into misdirected, if well-intentioned, public policies that waste scarce resources and distract from real issues like a large income-based digital divide.
