Working Paper No. 22, Coffee And The American Independence Movement, Ross Bradner

Working Papers in Economics

Coffee has a long history as a motivating force in society, as can be seen through its history in different parts of the world. Working Paper No. 38, Baseball In The Nineteenth Century: From Sport To Business, Brian Burres Dec 2018

Working Paper No. 38, Baseball In The Nineteenth Century: From Sport To Business, Brian Burres

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that in the 19th century baseball transitioned from a sport to a business activity. At the outset, the game of baseball was first played for the enjoyment of the players and spectators. Typically, teams were composed of players stemming from the towns for which they played, and early organized leagues enacted rules to keep the game played as a serious activity—but for amateurs. As the 19th century came towards its close, these amateur leagues were challenged by the emergence of new, professional leagues, and players took the liberty to play for the teams …

Working Paper No. 10, The Epic Rise And Subtle Fall Of American Herbalism, Julia Schweid Dec 2018

Working Paper No. 10, The Epic Rise And Subtle Fall Of American Herbalism, Julia Schweid

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that we can track the development and evolution of herbalism as the initial form of medicine in American economic history. Upon colonization of North America, the indigenous people generously shared their knowledge of plant medicine with the settlers from Europe. The indigenous knowledge combined with the translation of ancient herbal texts created a synthesis of understanding and an important form of cultural exchange. People then began making attempts to standardize the medicine and its potency was compromised with the rise of the industry in patent medicine, or what I have named pseudo herbalism. It was …

Working Paper No. 28, Roots Of The American Labor Movement, Lillian Garcia Dec 2018

Working Paper No. 28, Roots Of The American Labor Movement, Lillian Garcia

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that early developments in America’s workforce helped to shape the national labor movement that emerged at the end of the 19th Century. The first section discusses the changing social, economic, and legal landscapes from the colonial era to the Industrial Revolution. The second section examines the history of concerted action amongst the free and bound working classes leading up to 1842, when the case Commonwealth v. Hunt established the previously contested per se legality of labor combinations. The final section discusses developments in labor organization during the decades following Hunt, in which, amidst …

Working Paper No. 02, Marx On British Colonialism In India, Lauren Sweger-Hollingsworth Dec 2018

Working Paper No. 02, Marx On British Colonialism In India, Lauren Sweger-Hollingsworth

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that Karl Marx offers a penetrating understanding of British colonialism in India. Marx emphasizes that England essentially leveled the entire foundation of Indian society, separating India from its ancient traditions and history, destroying the basis for the regions agriculture, and undermining their manufacturing industries. The Court of Directors, under the authorization of the Crown, appointed the government of India. The administration allocated the country to the highest bidder, cost Indian citizens large sums of money each year, and perpetuated its abuses. Furthermore, the system of taxation was onerous and more oppressive than any other in …

A Key Currency View Of Global Imbalance, Hiro Ito, Robert N. Mccauley Jul 2018

A Key Currency View Of Global Imbalance, Hiro Ito, Robert N. Mccauley

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study divides the world into currency zones according to the co-movement of each currency with the key currencies. The dollar zone groups economies that produce well over half of global GDP. The euro zone now includes almost all of Europe and some commodity producers, but remains less than half the size of the dollar zone. The dollar zone share has shown striking stability despite big shifts across zones over time. These include the demise of the sterling zone and the expansion of the DM/euro from northwestern Europe to Europe and beyond. Global imbalances look very different from a currency …

Clackamas County: Tobacco License Impact Analysis, Peter Hulseman, Emma Willingham Apr 2018

Clackamas County: Tobacco License Impact Analysis, Peter Hulseman, Emma Willingham

Northwest Economic Research Center Publications and Reports

Passage of Senate Bill 754 (Tobacco 21) in August of 2017 raised the tobacco sales age from 18 to 21 in Oregon. However, there is currently no state law requiring retailers to have a license to sell tobacco products within the state. Without a full registry of tobacco vendors, it is difficult to determine whether or not said vendors are complying with the new law. Other counties within Oregon have adopted regional tobacco retail license programs, which help to ensure compliance with Tobacco 21. With this in mind, the Clackamas County Public Health Division requested that the Northwest Economic Research …

Working Paper No. 08, A Non-Equilibrium Approach To Economics: Towards An Intellectual Biography Of Gunnar Myrdal, Leo Kendall Mar 2018

Working Paper No. 08, A Non-Equilibrium Approach To Economics: Towards An Intellectual Biography Of Gunnar Myrdal, Leo Kendall

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that Gunnar Myrdal provided a foundation for and also practiced a non-equilibrium approach to economics. Throughout his career, Gunnar Myrdal was tasked with researching and providing policy for some of the most pressing economic issues of the 20th century. This inquiry considers and examines what I have selected as the most important areas of research over the span of Myrdal’s career, while showing how and why a nonequilibrium was required. First, I start with racial inequality and how Myrdal’s research broke ground on the subject. Next, I consider his key contribution towards understanding regional inequality …

State Medicaid Fees And Access To Primary Care Physicians, Rajiv Sharma, Sarah E. Tinkler, Arnab Mitra, Sudeshna Pal, Raven Susu-Mago Mar 2018

State Medicaid Fees And Access To Primary Care Physicians, Rajiv Sharma, Sarah E. Tinkler, Arnab Mitra, Sudeshna Pal, Raven Susu-Mago

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Medicaid and uninsured patients are disadvantaged in access to care and are disproportionately Black and Hispanic. Using a national audit of primary care physicians, we examine the relationship between state Medicaid fees for primary care services and access for Medicaid, Medicare, uninsured, and privately insured patients who differ by race/ethnicity and sex. We found that states with higher Medicaid fees had higher probabilities of appointment offers and shorter wait times for Medicaid patients, and lower probabilities of appointment offers and longer wait times for uninsured patients. Appointment offers and wait times for Medicare and privately insured patients were unaffected by …

Shifted Baselines Reduce Willingness To Pay For Conservation, Loren Mcclenachan, Ryunosuke Matsuura, Payal Shah, Sahan T.M. Dissanayake Feb 2018

Shifted Baselines Reduce Willingness To Pay For Conservation, Loren Mcclenachan, Ryunosuke Matsuura, Payal Shah, Sahan T.M. Dissanayake

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A loss of memory of past environmental degradation has resulted in shifted baselines, which may result in conservation and restoration goals that are less ambitious than if stakeholders had a full knowledge of ecosystem potential. However, the link between perception of baseline states and support for conservation planning has not been tested empirically. Here, we investigate how perceptions of change in coral reef ecosystems affect stakeholders' willingness to pay (WTP) for the establishment of protected areas. Coral reefs are experiencing rapid, global change that is observable by the public, and therefore provide an ideal ecosystem to test links between beliefs …

On Monetary And Non-Monetary Interventions To Combat Corruption, Ritwik Banerjee, Arnab Mitra Jan 2018

On Monetary And Non-Monetary Interventions To Combat Corruption, Ritwik Banerjee, Arnab Mitra

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the relative effectiveness of extrinsic monetary disincentives and intrinsic non-monetary disincentives to corruption, using a harassment bribery game. In doing so, we also test the Beckerian prediction that at the same level of expected payoff, a low probability of detection with high fine is a stronger deterrent to corruption than a high probability of detection with low fine. In Experiment 1, two treatments are designed to study the effect of a low probability of detection with high fine and a high probability of detection with low fine, on bribe taking behavior. In Experiment 2, subjects participate in the …

Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership: Economic Impact Analysis -- January 2018 Update, Emma Willingham Jan 2018

Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership: Economic Impact Analysis -- January 2018 Update, Emma Willingham

Northwest Economic Research Center Publications and Reports

The Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), founded in 1988, is a network of non-profit agencies staffed by industry professionals and consultants. Historically, MEP has sought to increase the competitiveness of small to mid-size enterprises (which as a group comprise 99% of all U.S. manufacturing firms) by providing expert guidance and access to resources. In recent years, the severe economic recession sparked increased interest in the strength of the manufacturing sector, due to its longtime status as one of the major drivers of the domestic economy. Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership (OMEP), the Oregon branch of MEP, works to provide data-driven analysis …
