Analyzing The Roles Of Law And Politics In Judicial Decision Making: Predicting U.S. Supreme Court Justices’ Votes On A Case Of Affirmative Action, Ashley Renkor

The Eastern Illinois University Political Science Review

This study seeks to study relevant precedent cases concerning affirmative action, the 14th Amendment equal protection clause, the 5th Amendment equal protection clause, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, with the goal of predicting how certain justices will vote in the affirmative action case, Fisher vs. the University of Texas at Austin. I conclude that justices will debate numerous aspects at play, such as original intent, plain meaning, precedent, policy preferences, public opinion, personal experience, the federal government, and interest groups in order to take positions in the Fisher case for the second time around with an intent …

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Economic Growth Evidence From Mena Countries, Hamid Lahouij Apr 2017

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Economic Growth Evidence From Mena Countries, Hamid Lahouij

2017 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents

The main focus of this research paper is to investigate the impacts of income inequality and other economic growth determinants on economic growth of some selected oil-importing MENA countries using a panel data for the time span 1980-2007. This paper contributes to the literature on income inequality, economic development indicators, and economic development in novel ways. Our findings indicate that income inequality decelerate the rate of change of economic development. However, the results of this research might conflict with others’ results if their research combines oil-exporting and oil-importing MENA countries in their sample or use different methodologies. Therefore, the policy …

Contribution Of International Trade To Economic Growth In Nigeria, Kehinde Abiodun Apr 2017

Contribution Of International Trade To Economic Growth In Nigeria, Kehinde Abiodun

2017 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents

Views differ on the impact of international trade on economic growth in developing countries. Whilst some scholars on the subject uphold the view that international trade leads to economic growth based on empirical evidence, others, albeit, in the minority, express a dissenting opinion.

This paper looks at the contribution of international trade to economic growth in Nigeria, a developing country, and establishes a nexus between international trade and economic growth. The variables considered are real GDP, a proxy for economic growth, export volumes, import volumes, trade openness, gross capital formation and exchange rate as independent variables. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test …

Structural Change And Productivity Growth In Developing Countries, Ahmed Salim Nuhu Jan 2017

Structural Change And Productivity Growth In Developing Countries, Ahmed Salim Nuhu

Masters Theses

The dual-economy model predicts that holding productivity constant, labor reallocation from less to more productive sectors, also known as 'structural change' results in improvement in economy-wide productivity. The objective of this thesis is to test the empirical predictions of this model using sectoral-level data from twenty-eight developing countries. Using the shift-share growth decomposition approach, we find regional growth-enhancing effects of structural change in Asia, Latin America and North Africa from, 1980 to 2000 and growth-reducing effects in Sub-Saharan Africa over the same period. However, as intersectoral productivity gaps disappeared after 2000, technological progress led the growth process in much of …

On The Empirics Of User-Fees, Maternal Health-Seeking Behavior And Child Survival In Ghana, Ahmed Salim Nuhu Jan 2017

On The Empirics Of User-Fees, Maternal Health-Seeking Behavior And Child Survival In Ghana, Ahmed Salim Nuhu

Student Honors Theses

This paper seeks to answer a simple question; what happens to maternal health seeking-behavior when user-fees are eliminated? We analyze this question empirically by investigating the effects of the free maternal health care (Health Insurance) policy instituted by the government of Ghana, on a variety of health utilization measures and child survival outcomes. Using robust linear and binomial logistic estimation techniques, we find evidence from over 4,000 households, that eliminating user-fees significantly increases the utilization of skilled delivery assistance whilst simultaneously reducing the number of deliveries assisted by unskilled birth attendants. Utilization of antenatal and postnatal care experience similar effects …

Export-Oriented Entrepreneurship Intensity And Economic Growth In Developing And Developed Countries, Xueting Sun Jan 2017

Export-Oriented Entrepreneurship Intensity And Economic Growth In Developing And Developed Countries, Xueting Sun

Masters Theses

This paper analyzes the impact of export-oriented entrepreneurship intensity on national economic growth using data for 64 countries over the 2006-2013 period. We draw on entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship and economic growth, export-oriented entrepreneurship and economic growth, and export intensity of entrepreneurship and economic growth theories to affirm that export-oriented entrepreneurship and export-oriented entrepreneurship intensity is profound for the national economic growth of countries.

The findings suggest that greater total entrepreneurial activity (TEA) is associated with a higher rate of economic growth in developed countries but not in developing countries. Also, greater export-oriented entrepreneurial activity (EEA) is associated with a higher rate …

Growth Performance Of Transition Countries After 25 Years, Alena Kalodzitsa Jan 2017

Growth Performance Of Transition Countries After 25 Years, Alena Kalodzitsa

Masters Theses

The present study provides with the most recent summary of growth performance in transition countries after 25 years since the change of the regime. The empirical analysis estimates growth, applying Generalized Least Squares (GLS) estimation technique using a panel of 26 transition countries for the period of 25 transition years (1990-2014). Empirical findings of this study confirm that growth performance can be explained by the degree of structural reforms, stabilization, and initial conditions along with other factors (external growth, regional tensions, government expenditure, and oil balance). Even if initial conditions are important for growth, its influence consistently declines.

The transition …

Determinants Of Import Demand In Ghana: 1960-2014, Freda Opoku-Agyemang Jan 2017

Determinants Of Import Demand In Ghana: 1960-2014, Freda Opoku-Agyemang

Masters Theses

This paper assesses the determinants of demand for import in Ghana using variables imports, exports, real gross domestic product, government spending, capital formation and exchange rate. The central aim of the study is to examine the relationship of Ghana's aggregate import demand and its determinants and then analyze the data from the period 1960 to 2014 and based on the above objectives, propose policies based on the results obtained from the analysis. All the data used were obtained from the World Bank database. The Johansen co-integration test suggested that there exists a long-run relationship between the imports (i.e. the dependent …

Natural Resources, Institutions, And Poverty: The Case Of The Mena Region, Abdulrhman M. Alamoudi Jan 2017

Natural Resources, Institutions, And Poverty: The Case Of The Mena Region, Abdulrhman M. Alamoudi

Masters Theses

While several Middle East and North Africa countries have a huge endowment of natural resources such as oil and natural gas, poverty indicators, as expressed by well-being indicators and headcount, are no better in these countries than others that are relatively poor in natural resources. For instance, oil rich countries, such as Syria and Sudan, have a lower life expectancy and school enrollment than poor-resources countries like Lebanon and Israel. This study thereby, investigates the cross-country differences of poverty response to changes in natural resources wealth. The paper utilizes a panel data model for the period from 1985 to 2014 …

Governance And Economic Growth In Developing Economies: A Comparative Study, Hamid Lahouij Jan 2017

Governance And Economic Growth In Developing Economies: A Comparative Study, Hamid Lahouij

Masters Theses

In the light of growing interest in the relationship between governance and economic growth, this research uses pooled cross-country times series for the time span 2002-2014 to investigate the impacts of governance and other growth determinants on economic growth of low-income, lower-middle income, and upper-middle income economies. This paper contributes to the literature on governance, economic development indicators, and economic development in novel ways. The research finds that governance is highly positively associated with economic development in developing countries regardless of their level of income. Moreover, while the research concludes that voice and accountability, political stability, and rule of law …

The S&P 500© Is Not A Leading Indicator For Us Gdp Over Policy-Relevant Time Frames, William D. Campbell Sr. Jan 2017

The S&P 500© Is Not A Leading Indicator For Us Gdp Over Policy-Relevant Time Frames, William D. Campbell Sr.

Masters Theses

Simply, we find S&P 500© returns are no longer a statistically meaningful leading indicator for growth in "real" per capita GDP. Technically, we find the SP500 fails to Granger cause real per capita GDP over policy relevant time frames while confirming nominal (non-inflation adjusted) SP500 quarterly returns continue to Granger cause one-period ahead quarterly growth in inflation adjusted (real) US Per-Capita GDP over very long (and perhaps less meaningful from fiscal and monetary perspectives) time frames. In addition, we identify a likely transition period when the SP500 switched from a leading indicator to a lagging indicator. Therefore, in keeping with …

Trade Openness, Foreign Direct Investment And Infrastructure Spending: A Comparative Analysis Of Their Common Role In The Economic Development Between Selected Developed And Developing Economies, Yasser M. Alwafi

Masters Theses

This study examines the literature on how trade, foreign direct investments, and infrastructure development affect economic growth of selected developed and developing economies. A comparative analysis will be carried between developed economies (G7 countries) represented by Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States while the developing economies (BRICS countries) are represented by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The comparative analysis will be carried between years 1985 to 2015. In addition, the paper will establish the relationship between trade and economic growth in both developing and developed economies. Furthermore, the paper will establish that …
