Impact Of A Bblr Tax System On Standard Of Living In The United States: An Olg Approach, Assande Adom

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The debate about taxation matters remains relevant in the literature across schools of thoughts and decision-makers. Indeed, these matters carry far-reaching economic effects both domestically and internationally. Taxes can constitute major conduits for distortions and inefficiencies in the economy if not properly set and administered. This study explores the impact of a broad base lower rate (BBLR) tax system on lifetime standard of living in the United States. Toward that end, it considers a partial equilibrium framework in the form of a two-period overlapping generation (2- OLG) model with two groups of people: (i) the young or poor, and (ii) …

Resilience Of Developing Countries To Shocks: Case Study Of Waemu Countries With Sur And Var Approaches, Assande Adom Jan 2016

Resilience Of Developing Countries To Shocks: Case Study Of Waemu Countries With Sur And Var Approaches, Assande Adom

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This article investigates the economic resilience of West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) member states to shocks. Towards that end, an indepth study is conducted with, first, seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) and structural vector auto-regression (SVAR) models. Second, two indexes - namely, a resistance index and a recovery index — capturing two major aspects of economic resilience in a given country, or group of countries, are constructed. Following a comprehensive analysis of results, five key elements stand out: (i) the WAEMU as a whole takes longer than the individual member countries to accommodate both domestic and external shocks; (ii) …

The next word in the mission statement is “innovative.” We are about new ideas and approaches on the frontier of economic education. What does that look like? We will keep you up-to-date on the latest technology in the classroom, social media trends, economics in popular culture, classroom activities, and much more. If you …

Belarusian Export Potential: A Gravity Model Approach, Alena Kalodzitsa, Teshome Abebe Jan 2016

Belarusian Export Potential: A Gravity Model Approach, Alena Kalodzitsa, Teshome Abebe

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This research examines Belarusian export potential with Euro-centric and Russia-centric trade blocks, and analyzes key trade patterns of Belarusian exports during the period of 1998-2013. The empirical study applies the generalized gravity model of international trade, and uses the panel data technique for data analysis. The panel dataset includes Belarusian exports to 43key trade partners and 9 explanatory variables. The results show that the importer's GDP and population, distance and a dummy variable for former soviet republics, are statistically significant for Belarusian exports. However, the real exchange rate, the Slavic language, and common borders were insignificant in the model. Consistent …

Idiosyncratic Risk And Development In Developing Countries, Minh Dao

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the impact of idiosyncratic risk management on economic development in developing countries. Based on data from the World Bank, we use a sample of twenty-seven developing economies and find that selected indicators related to risk management at the household level do have a statistically significant effect on economic development in these countries. Regression results show that almost four-fifths of cross-developing country variations in purchasing power parity per capita gross national income can be explained by its linear dependency on the percentage of the population aged over 25 who have completed the tertiary level of education, education quality …

Drivers Of Economic Growth In Developing Countries, Minh Dao Jan 2014

Drivers Of Economic Growth In Developing Countries, Minh Dao

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the impact of the drivers of economic growth in developing countries. We modify the conventional neoclassical growth model to account for the impact of the increase in the number of people working relative to the total population and that of the increase in the value added per worker over time. Based on data from the World Bank for the 1995-2010 period and a sample of thirty-eight developing economies we find that the growth rate of per capita GDP is linearly dependent on technological progress, gross capital formation, the initial level of output per capita, and labour productivity …

Exports, Imports, Government Consumption And Economic Growth In Upper-Middle Income Countries, Minh Dao Jan 2014

Exports, Imports, Government Consumption And Economic Growth In Upper-Middle Income Countries, Minh Dao

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Esfahani (1991) shows that the statistically significant correlation between export promotion and economic growth in semi-industrialized countries (SICs) has been mainly attributable to the role of exports in reducing import ‘shortages’, which have impeded output growth in these countries. As a result, export-promotion policies as a superior development strategy in SICs play an important role in those that cannot secure sufficient foreign aid or investment. Esfahani (1991) also develops a simultaneous equations model to address the simultaneity bias between GDP and export growth rates. In this article we extend the model developed by Esfahani (1991) by incorporating the contribution of …

Agricultural Productivity And Poverty Reduction In Nepal, Satis Devkota, Mukti P. Upadhyay Oct 2013

Agricultural Productivity And Poverty Reduction In Nepal, Satis Devkota, Mukti P. Upadhyay

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper provides for the first time a clear quantitative link between agricultural productivity and poverty among rural households in Nepal. Using data from a nationwide Nepal Living Standard Survey 2004, we first estimate household-specific productivity per worker under both Cobb–Douglas and translog production functions. Second, the paper identifies the determinants of productivity. Third, we explore a theoretical link between productivity and poverty using Sen's poverty index and find empirically that productivity growth substantially helps poverty reduction. Finally, the integrated effects of changes in productivity determinants are found to be stronger than the outcomes of sectoral policies taken in isolation.

The U.S. Folklore, Proverbs, And Economic Behavior, Ahmed Abou-Zaid Jan 2013

The U.S. Folklore, Proverbs, And Economic Behavior, Ahmed Abou-Zaid

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Social scientists strongly believe that the cultural values and norms motivate, guide, and influence the behavior of each and every society. However, studying the relationship between culture and behavior, notably economic behavior, is not very popular in the literature, mainly because of the vague and broad definition of the culture. Thereby this paper provides a narrow definition of the culture as “the set of beliefs and values that are often revealed in folklore of the country, where proverbs are the most concise form of the verbal folklore genres.” Using this definition, the paper attempts to relate several types of economic …

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the impact of gender gaps in human capital on economic growth in developing countries. Based on data from the World Bank for the 1990-2010 period and a sample of seventy-eight developing economies, we find that the growth rate of GDP per capita is dependent on gross capital formation, the changes in both male and female life expectancy, the change in the gap between male and female life expectancy, the change in the proportion of the population having access to improved sanitation services, population growth, and the GDP per capita in 2000. It is observed that the estimated …

Poverty In Agrarian Developing Economies, Minh Dao

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the determinants of poverty in agrarian developing economies. Based on data from the World Bank and a sample of thirty agrarian developing economies we find that the fraction of the population below the national poverty line is linearly dependent on urbanization as measured by the fraction of the total population living in urban areas, the maternal mortality ratio, the level of development as measured by purchasing power parity per capita gross national income, and the fraction of births attended by skilled health staff. We observe that the coefficient estimate of one explanatory variable, namely, the fraction of …

The Role Of Policy Fundamentals In Fostering Economic Growth In Developing Countries, Minh Dao

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the role of policy fundamentals in fostering economic growth in developing countries. Based on data from the World Bank for the 2000-2011 period and a sample of sixty-two developing economies we find that the growth rate of per capita GDP is dependent on a country’s investments in human capital as measured by the share of the public sector in total health expenditure and by the relative size of public education in the government’s budget, on an enabling business environment as measured by two Doing Business indicators, namely the cost of starting a business as a percent of …
