An Examination Of Treatment Effects With A Focus On Postsecondary State Merit Aid Programs, Sherry Jensen Dec 2011

An Examination Of Treatment Effects With A Focus On Postsecondary State Merit Aid Programs, Sherry Jensen

All Dissertations

With a focus on the impact of postsecondary merit aid programs, this body of research uses a variety of econometric methods to evaluate treatment effects. Since the introduction of Georgia's HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally) scholarship in 1993, a large number of U.S. states have introduced merit-based financial aid programs. As a growing emphasis is placed on higher education and an increased level of scrutiny is directed toward postsecondary charges, it is important to formally investigate the impact of such programs on the behavior of higher education institutions and students.

Using multiple state merit aid programs introduced over the period …

Abortion, Income, Wantedness: Evidence From The American Community Survey, Francisco Arceo Dec 2011

Abortion, Income, Wantedness: Evidence From The American Community Survey, Francisco Arceo

All Theses

This paper serves two purposes: (1) to find the effect of the legalization of abortion on future wages and (2) to test Donohue-Levitt's 'Wantedness Hypothesis' (i.e., that relatively more wanted children have superior economic outcomes). Non-parametric evidence suggests that the legalization of abortion increased the annual salary and wage and salary income for people born before 1973 in a state with legal abortion. The OLS specifications suggest that once state surveyed and state of birth effects are included into the models the effect is negative. Once macroeconomic and other unobservable effects are controlled for, I find no evidence of an …

An Analysis Of Managerial Retention Decisions Using Major League Baseball, William Ward Dec 2011

An Analysis Of Managerial Retention Decisions Using Major League Baseball, William Ward

All Theses

Major League Baseball managers are often blamed for the poor performance of a baseball team. In the past two years alone, there have been eight midseason managerial firings and six postseason managerial firings. While this number may seem high, these numbers have actually been consistent with probabilities of managerial retention since 1930, when baseball was still in the early stages of its development as a professional sport. In the following study, I examine the factors that are taken into account during these managerial firing decisions and what conditions are present when changes do take place. Using Major League Baseball managerial …

Essays On The Performance Of Us Bank Holding Companies, Liliana Danila Aug 2011

Essays On The Performance Of Us Bank Holding Companies, Liliana Danila

All Dissertations

I employ nonparametric estimation techniques to explore different aspects of the performance of US bank holding companies (BHCs).
In my paper 'Market Pricing of U.S. Bank Holding Companies' Technical Efficiency,' I use quarterly data from 1986 to 2009 to examine whether changes in technical efficiencies of U.S. BHCs are reflected in their stock returns. The relationship between technical efficiency and stock returns is analyzed both in a financial and accounting framework. Efficiencies are estimated using the unconditional hyperbolic α-quantile estimator developed by Wheelock and Wilson (2008). This estimator is a local estimator and exhibits more desirable statistical properties than traditional …

Essays On Location Choice And The Demand For Housing Services, Ovidiu Lasca Aug 2011

Essays On Location Choice And The Demand For Housing Services, Ovidiu Lasca

All Dissertations

My dissertation addresses two important individual level decisions: the choice of location made by young college graduates and the demand for owner-occupied housing. Young college graduates are an important component of the skilled labor force and one of the population groups with the highest risk of relocation. As a result, they are often targeted by state level policies aimed at attracting or retaining them in the labor force. My research reveals an important factor that determines the location chosen by young college graduates at the beginning of their career, and therefore informs policy makers on novel ways to make a …

Essays In The Political Economy Of Higher Education Funding, Benjamin Compton Aug 2011

Essays In The Political Economy Of Higher Education Funding, Benjamin Compton

All Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the consequences of political influence on state higher education funding at the committee level. The State of South Carolina has a long history of using a formula to determine the appropriate amount of funding that is to be allocated to its colleges and universities. I use the funding level implied by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education's formula as a counterfactual against which actual levels of appropriation are measured. The membership of key state legislative committees with alumni members is used to determine if colleges receive a greater proportion of their performance funding target than those …

Crime, Punishment, And Institutions, David Wilson Aug 2011

Crime, Punishment, And Institutions, David Wilson

All Dissertations

The effect of prison conditions and discretionary parole on inmate behavior and crime rates is examined. Evidence suggests that prison conditions and crime rates are positively related, and that a shift away from discretionary parole leads to lower crime rates, but possibly higher levels of inmate misconduct.

Price Discrimination Among Different Strengths Of The Same Drugs, Shanshan Ni Aug 2011

Price Discrimination Among Different Strengths Of The Same Drugs, Shanshan Ni

All Theses

This thesis studies the price discrimination through the drug's market. Using the data from the USA and Chinese drugs' markets, we are looking for the factors what might affect the price discrimination. Counting the price per mg/ml and classifying the drugs by the diseases, we find that the price discrimination of the anti-infective drugs is the smallest in both countries, the drugs' prices are positively related to the price discrimination, and the standard deviation of the American drug's prices is smaller than the standard deviation of the Chinese drug's prices.

The Trend Of The Returns To Educations In Urban China During 1988 To 2002, Shuang Zheng Aug 2011

The Trend Of The Returns To Educations In Urban China During 1988 To 2002, Shuang Zheng

All Theses

China underwent a significant social and economic transformation starting from the 1980s. The transition to market oriented economy brought change to the market of human capital. Using Mincer-type equation, we analyzed the returns to education in China using the data from the Chinese Household Income Project Survey conducted in the years 1988, 1995 and 2002, which covers the most interesting period. Although the returns to education were found generally lower than world average, a significant and steady increase in the returns was observed. Actually, the returns to each schooling year were more than doubled in the fourteen years. This increase …

Essays On The Link Between Alcohol Consumption And Youth Fertility, Inna Cintina May 2011

Essays On The Link Between Alcohol Consumption And Youth Fertility, Inna Cintina

All Dissertations

In the first chapter, I use exogenous variation in state minimum legal drinking ages to examine the relationship between restrictions on teen alcohol consumption and youth fertility. Using individual level data, I find that a decrease in the minimum drinking age during the late 1970s and 1980s leads, surprisingly, to a decrease in pregnancy rate among 15-17 year-old white women. The pregnancy rate among 15-17 year-old black women, on the other hand, significantly increases with the decrease in the drinking age. I find similar racial variations for unwanted pregnancies among 15-17 years old. The differentiated response to changes in eligibility …

Why Pay For Paper? An Analysis Of The Internet's Effect On Print Newspaper Subscriber Retention, Kevin Payne May 2011

Why Pay For Paper? An Analysis Of The Internet's Effect On Print Newspaper Subscriber Retention, Kevin Payne

All Theses

The goal of this paper is to quantify the effect that increases in home internet access had on the print newspaper subscriber retention for an anonymous newspaper during the years 1998 through 2003. Using weekly, subscriber-level transaction data from the newspaper and internet usage statistics from the Current Population Survey Internet and Computer Use Supplements, a discrete-time duration model is used to estimate the effect that home internet access had on the probability of a current subscriber canceling her subscription. I find that on average, increasing the probability of internet access from the 10th to the 90th percentile value increases …

Domestic Determinants Of Preferential Trade Agreements, J Vomocil May 2011

Domestic Determinants Of Preferential Trade Agreements, J Vomocil

All Theses

The purpose of this paper is to expand previous research on the economic determinants of preferential trade agreements, both by using a updated data set and also by including new potential non-trade and domestic explanatory variables. I find that the differences in primary market sectors of trading partners, the differences in level of infrastructure, the size of countries' agricultural sectors, and differences in countries' degree of democratization are all significant factors in bilateral PTA creation, along with several other variables. While results may not be as strong as in earlier studies, there are several plausible explanations for this, and the …

The Impacts Of Drinking Alcohol, Using Marijuana, And Smoking Cigarettes As A Teenager On The Educational Attainment And The Income Of Young Adults, Thomas Carnot May 2011

The Impacts Of Drinking Alcohol, Using Marijuana, And Smoking Cigarettes As A Teenager On The Educational Attainment And The Income Of Young Adults, Thomas Carnot

All Theses

It is widely believed that activities such as drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and using marijuana during the teenage years have a harmful effect on a youth's development, thus damaging his or her value in the labor market once the individual reaches adulthood. There have been several studies in the past that have looked into the consequences of partaking in such activities during both the adult and college years, but this paper will investigate how the use of alcohol, marijuana, and cigarettes at the age of 16 affects the average individual's future income and the amount of education completed by the …

The Impact Of Trade Costs In Indonesian Agri-Food Sectors: An Interregional Cge Analysis, Irlan Rum May 2011

The Impact Of Trade Costs In Indonesian Agri-Food Sectors: An Interregional Cge Analysis, Irlan Rum

All Theses

An interregional Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) approach is used to measure the impact of variable internal trade costs have on regional consumer welfare and interregional market integration within the Indonesian economy. Existing high interregional price differences in the agri-food markets suggest the presence of variable internal trade costs, which serve as effective barriers to interregional trade. Given the important role of agri-food markets in both food security and income generation for rural households, these price differences can have significant welfare impacts on both producers and consumers. Reducing the costs of trade between Indonesia's various regions could facilitate interregional trade. Trade …

Immigration And Illicit Drugs: Two Case Studies And Their Connection With Select European Countries, And Potential Implications For American Policy, Seth Huffman May 2011

Immigration And Illicit Drugs: Two Case Studies And Their Connection With Select European Countries, And Potential Implications For American Policy, Seth Huffman

All Theses

Two topics of much debate in the United States, immigration and drug prohibition, are issues that all countries must scrutinize. I have taken two Euro areas, Scandinavia and Portugal, and have attempted to use them as templates for the United States so to draw potential policy implications. Scandinavian countries can be characterized as having pull factors in the form of welfare policies, which draw immigrants to those countries. It is hard to deduce whether this has a negative effect on the country because immigrants, not only use services, but are also consumers. This creates a problem as we try to …
