Salvaging Print: Letterhead In Post-Industrial Urban America, Nancy Sharon Collins
The Mid-America Print Council Conference
This panel will explore the link between today’s small press movement and the formal aspects of commercial printing during the American 20th century. Panelists include Christine Medley , Philip Gattuso, and Nancy Bernardo.
Using as its primary example letterhead from defunct companies in Detroit, and secondarily, specimens of business and legal letterhead from other urban centers of the industrial United States, this panel will examine and discuss: What did letterhead represent to 20th century printers in local markets such as Detroit? What is the significance of printed letterhead, and stationery, to the art of small press printing in post-industrial cities …
Digitally Mapping The Growth Of The Railroads In The United States, Michael Weaver
Digitally Mapping The Growth Of The Railroads In The United States, Michael Weaver
Yale Day of Data
As part of my dissertation, I creating digital maps of the extent of the railways in the United States during the late 19th century (1880 to 1910) on a yearly basis. While other researchers have created digital maps of the railways in approximately 10-year intervals, this misses out on the rapid change in the railways in the interim. These previous digitization attempts have relied on using detailed maps created of the railways at a given time. But accurate maps were not made on a yearly basis and only exist for roughly every 10 years. However, during the 19th century, people …

Governance And Private Investment In Africa, Idrissa Ouedraogo, Pascal Kouman
Governance And Private Investment In Africa, Idrissa Ouedraogo, Pascal Kouman
International Conference on African Development
Africa is one of the world regions whose development potentials are particularly important. But despite this situation, Africa is one of the continents where poverty exists on a large scale. More than 44 % of the African population lives below the poverty line. Yet, various forms of development strategies have been designed and implemented in the African countries. In 1992, in its publication Governance and Development, the World Bank refers to the quality of government as the cause of the failure of several of these strategies. Attention is henceforth focused on how governments organize the management of state and govern …
Governance Of Land And Natural Resource For Sustainable Development In Botswana: Possible Lessons For The Agricultural And Tourism Sectors, David Sebudubudu, Patricia Makepe, Keratilwe Bodilenyane, Kgomotso Montsi
Governance Of Land And Natural Resource For Sustainable Development In Botswana: Possible Lessons For The Agricultural And Tourism Sectors, David Sebudubudu, Patricia Makepe, Keratilwe Bodilenyane, Kgomotso Montsi
International Conference on African Development
Realizing sustainable development is a major challenge for most African states. Economic development in most African countries is largely centered on the exploitation of natural resources, particularly minerals. Rather than facilitate development, the exploitation of natural resources in most countries, has been a source of adverse outcomes. That is, natural resources led to ‘the resource curse’, owing in part to bad leadership and governance. Through good leadership and governance, Botswana emerged differently. The country transformed itself to a middle income status through the prudent exploitation and management of mineral resources; making Botswana one of the few resource rich countries to …

Parallel Sessions (Consumer Behavior & Culture): The Emerging Middle Class In Pakistan: How It Consumes, Earns, And Saves, Jawaid Abdul Ghani
International Conference on Marketing
During the first decade of the twenty first century, and for the first time in the history of Pakistan, over half of the households in the country belonged to the middle class (M-class). During this period (2002-2011) the M-class, defined as households with daily per capita expenditures of $2-$10 in 2005 purchasing power parity dollars1 , grew from 32 percent to 55 percent of all households in the country, and the number of people in this class doubled from 38 million to 84 million. Real aggregate national consumption increased by about $60 billion, of which $55 billion was accounted for …

Banking system was firstly introduce in the era of Jews where large bankers use to do financial practices in the open market. In the past few decades‟ capitalistic economy gained momentum. Islamic banking was firstly introduced in Malaysia with the establishment of Islamic banks laid on the basis of SHARIAH compliance, during 1970-90 (Henry & Wilson, 2004; Iqbal &Mirakhor, 2007; Dusuki& Abdullah, 2007). Banking is as old as civilization found its way from barter economies towards market economy and price mechanism. At present the banks have an immense role in deciding the economic fate of any state. Strong banking system …
Argentina's 2001 Default: Foreign Policy Considerations And Consequences, Joshua K. Alley
Argentina's 2001 Default: Foreign Policy Considerations And Consequences, Joshua K. Alley
Celebration
Argentina’s 2001 default was at the time the largest in history, with the Peronist government of Adolfo Rodriguez Saa declaring a cessation of payments on over 80 billion dollars in government bonds. Historically, the political science and economics literatures have emphasized the economic considerations surrounding the decision to default. Recent literature has explored the political motivations for default, but there has been little scholarship on the possible political consequences of default. Some authors have emphasized that default can have important audience costs for leaders, but other issues have been left unexplored. However, it is clear that Argentina’s 2001 default had …
Municipal Recycling In Waterville: A Choice Experiment, Alexander Finigan, Katharine Eddy
Municipal Recycling In Waterville: A Choice Experiment, Alexander Finigan, Katharine Eddy
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
The Waterville, Maine community has experienced many struggles with establishing an economically and socially beneficial method for collecting recyclables from residents. In 2006, the town made the choice to terminate its curbside recycling pickup and open the Skills facility, where residents were able to transport there recyclables and dispose of them at the facility. This proved to also not be economically beneficial and the town ended this option for residents in 2012. The motivation behind establishing a new recycling program in Waterville is making Waterville more environmentally friendly, the creation of jobs for residents in the trash collecting business, moral …
The Color And Value Of Art, Leilani S C Pao
The Color And Value Of Art, Leilani S C Pao
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
There has been research in psychology, marketing and economics about the impact of color on peoples behavior, in particular peoples consumer behavior. My project examines the relationship between the value of art and color. I am interested to find out whether the solid background a painting is placed on, its environmental color, has an influence on the amount a person values the painting. My experimental survey to the Colby College community and visitors of the Colby College Museum of Art consists of two parts. In the first part of the survey, I ask the participants to come up with the …
Financial Crisis And Its Impact On Institutional College Financial Aid, Salome Giorgadze, Lillian Liang
Financial Crisis And Its Impact On Institutional College Financial Aid, Salome Giorgadze, Lillian Liang
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
The 2008 financial crisis impacted almost everyone in the world, particularly US households that have lost on average in income. A common problem that currently plagues the minds of college students is the cost of education. Households are still recovering from the monetary impacts of the financial crisis. We recognize that college grants and scholarships are important to students who wish to pursue higher education, and so do the colleges. Majority of the colleges have carefully designed institutional financial aid options, which usually consist of institutional grants, scholarships, work studies, and loans. Around 75% of full-time undergraduate students in the …
Examining The Target Levels Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards, Laurence D. Helwig
Examining The Target Levels Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards, Laurence D. Helwig
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
At present 37 US states have passed Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) or have a legislative driven goal that supports investment in renewable energy (RE) technologies. Previous research has identified economic, governmental, ideological and infrastructural characteristics as key predictors of policy adoption and renewable energy deployment efforts (Carley, 2009; Davis & Davis, 2009; Bohn & Lant, 2009; Lyon & Yin, 2010). To date, only a few studies have investigated the target levels of renewable portfolio standards. Carley & Miller (2012) found that policies of differing stringencies were motivated by systematically different factors that included governmental ideology. The purpose of this study …
Exploring The Community Factor Of Economic Resiliency, Al G. Gourrier
Exploring The Community Factor Of Economic Resiliency, Al G. Gourrier
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
Resilience takes on many different meanings, but when we speak of the resilience of a market we are generally referencing the capability of that market’s capacity to respond, regroup and move forward, usually after an event or series of events that impede or encumber a market’s economic sustainability. The outcomes of a stable and performing market are indicated by its economic performance. Using economic indicators as a base, this study analyzes three markets as they recover from destabilizing events and attempt to respond, regroup and move forward. The study analyzes the Las Vegas, New Orleans and Detroit markets from an …

Respondent Learning And Fatigue In Stated Choice Experiments, Derek Lindgren, Criag Broadbent, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
Stated choice experiments have been shown to be a reliable valuation method for non-marketed goods and services. These experiments are usually conducted in a hypothetical survey form. Previous research has indicated that certain behavioral patterns in elicited respondents are inherent in the survey form and length. This study attempts to investigate if there is evidence of the behavioral patterns of preference learning and fatigue by analyzing data from two spate stated choice studies: 1) extensions to Constitution Trail in Bloomington/Normal, IL, 2) Riparian Forest Restoration in the Middle Rio Grande, NM. In comparing the estimated willingness to pays for each …

Meeting The Challenge Of Reconstruction And Development In Fragile States: Lessons From Aceh, Haiti, And South Sudan, Josef Leitmann
Meeting The Challenge Of Reconstruction And Development In Fragile States: Lessons From Aceh, Haiti, And South Sudan, Josef Leitmann
International Institute for Infrastructure Resilience and Reconstruction (I3R2) Conference
Reconstruction and development in poor, fragile countries present a double challenge: tackling the issues of poverty and underdevelopment as well as the constraints posed by instability, poor governance, and weak capacity. This context generates a range of problems that include: insecurity, insufficient planning, inadequate implementation capacity, poor financial management, misprocurement, corruption, a volatile fiscal environment, ineffective donor coordination, and negative environmental and social impacts. The paper draws lessons from positive and negative experiences in meeting these challenges in three conflict- and/or disaster-affected cases: Aceh Province, Indonesia (postdisaster reconstruction and postconflict development following the tsunami and earthquakes of 2004), Haiti (postdisaster …
Housing The Workforce Following The Canterbury Earthquakes In New Zealand, Yan Chang-Richards, Suzanne J. Wilkinson, Erica Seville, David Brundson
Housing The Workforce Following The Canterbury Earthquakes In New Zealand, Yan Chang-Richards, Suzanne J. Wilkinson, Erica Seville, David Brundson
International Institute for Infrastructure Resilience and Reconstruction (I3R2) Conference
Temporary housing following a large-scale disaster has a positive effect on household welfare and community recovery. Following the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, a shortage of temporary accommodation created barriers for the outside construction workforce to engage in repairs and rebuild in Christchurch. This study investigates the impacts of housing shortages for the overall recovery and the strategies adopted by both households and the workforce in the building industry. Findings suggest that the interplay among the industry strategies and household strategies for securing housing determines the magnitude and scope of economy-wide inflation. One unfortunate consequence of these industry strategies is …

Robust Design Review Conversations, Andy Dong, Massimo Garbuio, Dan Lovallo
Design Thinking Research Symposium
Design reviews and executive conversations at the point of strategic decision-making share an important outcome: they both result in the (nearly) irrevocable allocation of resources to pursue a design concept or strategic option. Our study aims to contribute to the strategic decision-making scholarship by investigating the robustness of these conversations. We define a robust design review conversation as one in which the participants discuss evidence in favor of and against the option and at the same time propose new hypotheses to explain or resolve the evidence in favor of and against the option, hypotheses that can eventually be tested. We …
