This dissertation consists of two essays which are concerned with the measurement and description of Income Inequality. Chapter 1 studies the measurement of inequality when data is presented in binned form. While various methods have been proposed for this purpose, I reveal an issue which has not yet been addressed in the literature. I demonstrate that differences in mean earnings can cause differences in the measures of inequality, even if underlying income shares remain constant. The consequence of this issue is that the usage of many of the available methods will create estimates of inequality not suitable for descriptive purposes …

Minimum wage adjustment affects economic agent behaviors and leads to an unintended side effect s. The first chapter of the dissertation studies the impact of the minimum wage level on the college enrollment. Using institution-level data from IPEDS, the results show that the real minimum wage level has significant and diverse effects on different types of enrollment. The results are robust using several alternative specifications and individual level analysis. The second chapter of the dissertation addresses another side effect of the minimum wage law: crime. The Affordable Care Act’s dependent coverage mandate extended young adults’ parental coverage to age 26. I study the expansion’s impact on young adults’ labor market outcomes using a control function method. Following the expansion, I find dependent coverage lowered labor force participation, lowered incomes, and mixed evidence regarding labor supply.

Bullying And Human Capital Accumulation: Evidence From The National Longitudinal Survey Of Youth, 1997, Jessica Lum

Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1997 (NLSY97) is used to study the effect of bullying on human capital accumulation. Findings suggest that adolescent bullying has a significant and negative impact on the highest educational level attained, as well as income earned as an adult.
