During the period 1909-1949 many changes took place in agricultural production and cash farm income in Cache County, Utah. Important factors which caused changes in agricultural production and cash farm income during this period were technological developments in farm power and machinery, plant and animal breeding, changes in consumer demands price changes, and climatic conditions. The influence of these factors on both production and income varied with the enterprise, the commodity, and the year studied.

Chickens and eggs rank fourth among the farm enterprises in Utah as a source of farm cash receipts. In 1949 about 21 million dollars of cash receipts were received from sales of chickens and eggs which represented 13.2 percent of total receipts from farm marketings (table 1). In the same year 17.7 percent of total receipts were derived from cattle and calves, the largest enterprise. Receipts from dairy products represented 15 percent and sheep, lambs, and wool 13.8 percent.

In 1951 the cattlemen of Utah produced 126 million pounds of beef (2). Very few of these cattleman knew what their marketing costs were and what their marketing costs would have been if they had chosen some alternative method of marketing their cattle. The knowledge of what marketing costs are should be as essential to the individual cattlemen as his ability to feed, fatten, and care for his cattle. Utah ranked nineteenth in the United States in the production of peaches for a ten year period 1940-49, producing 1.2 percent of the national total. Peach production is an important part of Utah's fruit industry. The 1951 peach crop estimated at 800,000 bushels, valued at $1,520,000 represents 32 percent of the value of all the fruit grown in Utah and 0.8 percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state.
