Globalization And Integration In The Asia-Pacific: Prospects And Risks, Noel Gaston, Ahmed Khalid
Globalization And Integration In The Asia-Pacific: Prospects And Risks, Noel Gaston, Ahmed Khalid
Ahmed Khalid
Extract: Globalization is very much part of the modern vernacular. Arguably, it was first used by McLuhan and Fiore (1968) when they introduced the concept of the "global village". Globalization is characterized by the growth of the international trade of goods and services, the growth in foreign direct investment (FDI) as well as the political and social linkages that accompany growing economic integration. Outwardly, the driving forces seem to be the decline in administrative barriers to trade, sharp falls in the costs of transportation and communication, fragmentation of production processes and the development in information and communication technology OCT). Arguably, …

Preface This document comprises a summary and analysis of a benchmark index and learning tool that assesses the capacity of countries in the Asia-Pacific region to carry out sustainable publicprivate infrastructure partnerships, as of June 2011. The methodology is based on a similar study of Latin America and the Caribbean published in 2009 and 2010. The index was built by the Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The views and opinions expressed in this publication are those of the Economist Intelligence Unit and do not necessarily reflect the official position of the ADB. An Economist …

Changes In The Labor Market, Vernon Briggs
Changes In The Labor Market, Vernon Briggs
Vernon M Briggs Jr
[Excerpt] The service-oriented economy has an undeservedly bad reputation. The notion of a service-oriented economy somehow conjures up an impression of a nation of "hamburger flippers." That's not where the growth in employment is coming in the service sector. In fact, the greatest increases in the service sector are coming in the professional and technical areas. Fully one-third of the growth in employment since 1972 has occurred in the professional-technical worker classification. Eighty percent of the managerial jobs in the United States are in the service sector. As a consequence, the changes require a better prepared labor force than we've …

Illegal Immigration And The Dilemma Of American Unions, Vernon Briggs
Vernon M Briggs Jr
[Excerpt] Over its long and often turbulent evolution, the American labor movement has confronted few issues as persistently and as difficult has those related to subject of immigration. By definition, immigration affects the size of the labor force at any given time as well as its geographical distribution and skill composition. These vital influences, in turn, affect national, regional and local labor market conditions. Most immigrants directly join the labor force upon entering the country, as do eventually most of their family members. Hence, organized labor never has ignored immigration trends. As Samuel Gompers, one of the founders of the …

The Creation And Growth Of Information Technology Communication (Ict) Industrial Clusters: The New Zealand Case, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly
The Creation And Growth Of Information Technology Communication (Ict) Industrial Clusters: The New Zealand Case, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
This paper is based on a review of literature into industrial clusters and subsequently discusses identified success factors within the context of ICT industrial clusters generally and New Zealand ICT industrial clusters in particular. It is argued that through identifying the success attributes underpinning industrial clusters a baseline can be established for decision-making by both industry vertical groups and various levels of government. It is also proposed that the application of this baseline logic to the development of New Zealand ICT clusters will enhance the domestic and international development of these clusters. The paper identifies that the key components of …

Bayesian Model Averaging In R, Shahram Amini, Christopher Parmeter
Bayesian Model Averaging In R, Shahram Amini, Christopher Parmeter
Christopher F. Parmeter
Bayesian model averaging has increasingly witnessed applications across an array of empirical contexts. However, the dearth of available statistical software which allows one to engage in a model averaging exercise is limited. It is common for consumers of these methods to develop their own code, which has obvious appeal. However, canned statistical software can ameliorate one’s own analysis if they are not intimately familiar with the nuances of computer coding. Moreover, many researchers would prefer user ready software to mitigate the inevitable time costs that arise when hard coding an econometric estimator. To that end, this paper describes the relative …
