Sundarbans, the largest delta on the planet earth is famous for its marine and estuarine fish resources. A large population is dependent on fishery activity and capture fisheries is treated as the backbone of Sundarban economy. Sundarban boast around 172 species of fishes, 20 species of prawn and 44 species of crabs including two edible crabs. Are Social Norms Campaigns Really Magic Bullets? Assessing The Effects Of Students' Misperceptions On Drinking Behavior, Michelle Campo, Dominique Brossard, S. Frazer, Timothy Marchell
Are Social Norms Campaigns Really Magic Bullets? Assessing The Effects Of Students' Misperceptions On Drinking Behavior, Michelle Campo, Dominique Brossard, S. Frazer, Timothy Marchell
Michelle L. Campo
In an attempt to curb excessive drinking on college campuses, many universities have turned to "social norms" marketing campaigns. Despite widespread acceptance among health educators, empirical results are clouded by measurement problems. This study, based on a random sample of 550 students, examined the effects of misperceptions of friends' and typical college students' drinking on one's drinking behavior. Results indicate that drinking behavior is positively related to perceptions of friends' drinking as suggested by the theory of planned behavior, which emphasizes subjective as opposed to social norms.

Oh That Wonderful Stuff": Selected Poetry By College And Middle School Students, Shawn Apostel

When students use poetry to imagine and explore academic subjects, they examine the topic in new, creative ways, resulting in interesting and lively writings that stimulate thought and class discussions. The following poems are examples of student poetry written in a variety of classes throughout the curriculum. I am pleased to showcase student writing in this section, and I hope reading these poems will suggest possibilities and adaptations for teachers and students elsewhere.

Who Are These Guys? The Online Challenge To The Notion Of Journalistic Professionalism, Jane Singer
Who Are These Guys? The Online Challenge To The Notion Of Journalistic Professionalism, Jane Singer
Jane B. Singer
The people who claim membership in a profession and delineate its attributes do so at least in part to justify inequality of status, as well as to limit and control access to that status. The key role of the professional can be fulfilled only by people with particular training, skills and judgement, and it is crucial that the distinction between practitioner and layperson be clearly recognized by all parties. This article suggests that online news workers fundamentally challenge the already-disputed concept of journalists as professionals. It identifies and explores key aspects of that challenge across the cognitive, normative and evaluative …

Report Of The Metadata Access To Digital Collections Task Force, Ardis Hanson, Ilene Frank, Charles Gordon, Susan Heron, Linda Mcrae, Jim Michael, Tom Miller, Pete Reehling, Sue Vastine, Walter Rowe
Ardis Hanson
The charge of this Task Force evolved from an assignment to “work with the Head of Cataloging to develop a plan to strengthen the output of metadata needed for digital and electronic collections." This assignment grew out of a concern by Derrie Perez, Interim Dean of the USF Library System, that there was increased fragmentation of the USF Libraries collections, with electronic and digital collections accessed by means other than the online catalog. This report examines the USF Libraries Digital Collections from its foundation, its overall strategy, and structure of the current system. This model will allow a fuller picture …

The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald
The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald
Michael Friedewald
The importance of information and communication technologies in everyday life is increasing strongly. The growing penetration of PCs in households and offices and the almost ubiquitous use of mobile communication devices are vivid examples for this development.
The key drivers influencing the penetration, usage patterns and specific energy consumption of IC-equipment were examined and a bottom-up analysis of the direct energy consumption of ICT-equipment in households and offices was made for 2001 resulting an energy demand of 38 TWh. In addition, projections for the years 2005 and 2010 were developed based on the base year consumption and the key driving …
Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Michael H.G. Hoffmann
How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …
