Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart
Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart
Jason A Snart
In his paper, "Entropy in Pynchon's 'Entropy' and Lefebvre's The Production of Space," Jason Snart examines Thomas Pynchon's short story "Entropy" for the ways in which it deals with the kinds of disorder(s) associated with entropy as a thermodynamic and informational concept. Those concepts are installed as a framework within which to consider cultural studies work like Henri Lefebfre's thought in his The Production of Space and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory and themodynamics: disorder is rendered not as confusion, but rather as a state of potential energy and productivity and Lefebvre's and Bertalanffy's concepts serve to show how …

Adolescents, The Internet And The Politics Of Gender: A Feminist Case Analysis, Meenakshi Durham
Meenakshi Gigi Durham
This case study is based on field observation of the first hands-on Internet sessions experienced by a group of lower-income minority teenagers in an inner-city middle school. Using feminist analysis to interrogate the social dynamic within which the Interact use took place, I explore how new technologies are appropriated by adolescents as a site of social bonding. I conclude that the adolescent users' social locations in terms of gender, race, and class work to constrain Internet use to support dominant relations of power

‘Where All Things Are Pure And Of Good Report’: The Doctrinal Theology, Religious Practice, And Media Manipulation Of The Christian Science Church, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr
Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR
The Church of Christ, Scientist is 21st century religious movement that is facing considerable challenges to its existence on many fronts. The church is bound to an unalterable religious theology and intractable management structure established by Mary Baker Eddy, its 19th century founder. For more than a century, the church has followed Mrs. Eddy’s example and successfully manipulated the media to control dissemination of information. Recent financial crisis and legal dissent has generated unprecedented dissent, both inside and outside Christian Science. This research looks at how church leadership struggles to address 21st century problems with its 19th century frameworks.

The federal Mental Health Parity Act of 1996 requires insurers to offer the same benefits for mental disorders and substance abuse as they would for physical disorders, including any annual or lifetime limitations and restrictions placed upon such coverage. This report examines actuarial studies, the current state of parity legislation across the nation, cost of treatment issues, and the impact on Florida should parity legislation be passed.

The Impact Of The Use Of New Communications And Information Technologies On Trafficking In Human Beings For Sexual Exploitation: A Study Of The Users, Donna M. Hughes Dr.
Donna M. Hughes
The trafficking in women and children for sexual exploitation is a global human rights crisis being
perpetrated by individual criminals and organized crime groups, and facilitated by increased tolerance
for the sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of women and children.
New communications and information technologies have created a global revolution in
communications, access to information, and media delivery. There are a lot of positive aspects to the
global revolution, but there are also some very negative ones. This report describes the most negative
ones—how communications and information technologies are used to facilitate the trafficking of
women and children for sexual …

Women On And Off Farms, Aneeja Guttikonda
aneeja guttikonda
Women are an integral force in India's agricultural system, yet their efforts go largely unrecognized. Not only are there a large number of untrained women working on farms, there are also many skilled, educated women in the field of agriculture. Linkages between professional women in the field of agriculture and rural women are needed to ensure real development of India's agricultural economy.
“No Problem, Mon”: Strategies Used To Promote Reggae Music As Jamaica’S Cultural Heritage, Stephen A. King, P. Renee Foster
“No Problem, Mon”: Strategies Used To Promote Reggae Music As Jamaica’S Cultural Heritage, Stephen A. King, P. Renee Foster
Stephen A. King
This paper examines efforts by the Jamaican government and its surrogates to control the Rastafarian movement and reggae music. Since the 1970s, the Jamaican establishment has employed an adjustment tactic, co-optation, to transform reggae music and Rastafari into a cultural attraction. In recent years, however, Rastafarian images and reggae have become increasingly important in the promotion of Jamaica’s tourist industry. The Jamaican government and its supporters have marketed the Rastafarian movement and reggae music as part of Jamaica’s “cultural heritage.” As a result, the Rastafarian movement has declined as a political and social force in Jamaica. In sum, reggae and …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Jealousy In The Family, Krystyna S. Aune, Jamie Comstock
Jayne Marie Comstock
A self-report instrument assessed an incident in which respondents experienced a threat to their relationship with a family member. The nature of the relationship with the family member was explored along with the experience, the emotional responses and coping behaviors, the degree of expression, perceived appropriateness, and the effects on the relationship. Results show that 52% of respondents experienced a jealousy incident in the family. Almost 50% of the incidents involved the respondent's sibling (approximately 30% sisters, 20% brothers), and more than 20% involved the respondent's mother. The perceived appropriateness of, and degree of jealousy experience were significantly greater than …
Managing Diversity: Establishing An Agenda For Organizational Change, Jamie Comstock
Managing Diversity: Establishing An Agenda For Organizational Change, Jamie Comstock
Jayne Marie Comstock
Managing organizational diversity requires managing change. Contemporary organizational leaders must prepare people to adapt to changes in organizational membership and effectively motivate all members of a diverse workforce. However, diversity initiatives are controversial and often met with employee resistance and a backlash of resentment, dissatisfaction, and group polarization. This paper advances a Dialectical Diversity Audit procedure that results in an effective agenda for diversity-related cultural change. The usefulness of the procedure is demonstrated through a Diversity Audit of a mid-sized public university in the southern United States. Using focus group interview techniques and interpretive ethnography, the Diversity Dialectics Audit “gave …

Henry W. Johnstone's Still Unacknowledged Contributions To Contemporary Argumentation Theory, Jean Goodwin
Jean Goodwin
Given the pragmatic tum recently taken by argumentation studies, we owe renewed attention to Henry Johnstone's views on the primacy of process over product. In particular, Johnstone's decidedly non-cooperative model is a refreshing alternative to the current dialogic theories of arguing, one which opens the way for specifically rhetorical lines of inquiry.

Narrative's Virtues, Art Bochner
Narrative's Virtues, Art Bochner

Reacting to the charge that personal narratives, especially illness narratives, constitute a “blind alley” that misconstrues the essential nature of narrative by substituting a therapeutic for a sociological view of the person, this article speaks back to critics who regard narratives of suffering as privileged, romantic, and/or hyperauthentic. The author argues that this critique of personal narrative rests on an idealized and discredited theory of inquiry, a monolithic conception of ethnographic inquiry, a distinctly masculine characterization of sociology, and a veiled resistance to the moral, political, existential, and therapeutic goals of this work. Layering his responses to the critique with …

Chicago Newspaper Theater Critics Of The Early 20th Century, Scott B. Fosdick
Chicago Newspaper Theater Critics Of The Early 20th Century, Scott B. Fosdick
Scott B. Fosdick
In the early years of the twentieth century, when live theater dominated the entertainment world and print media led public discourse, each without competition from electronic forms, the daily newspaper theater critic mediated ideas and values quite differently than today’s critics, whose main function has been reduced to that of a consumer guide. This article examines the corps of theater critics who served ten Chicago newspapers about 100 years ago. At a time when news editors were reluctant to cover new ideas and social movements, such as the push for women’s suffrage, theater critics were encountering radical new social ideas …

For The Record: An Oral History Of Rochester, New York Newsworkers, Bonnie Brennen
Bonnie Brennen
For the Record focuses on the experiences of journalists, primarily in their own words, who worked in Rochester, New York, on the Gannett owned Democrat & Chronicle and the Times Union. While there are occasional glimpses back to the beginning of the twentieth century and conversations regarding current newsroom policies by those who are still involved in the business, most of the material in this study centers on Gannett during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s-a period that may be seen as pivotal to the development of the Gannett Company. Although there is an enormous wealth of material available on the …
