The Role Of Research In Individual Events, James F. Weaver
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
The overall purpose of this paper is to pose the right questions, provide some good answers, and offer some recommendations. Specifically, the paper will address three questions: 1) What is the role of research in individual events? 2) What are some appropriate areas of research in individual events? 3) What are some reasonable recommendations which will ensure that research is conducted and the results disseminated?
Open-End Questions: Exploring The Qualitative Nature Of Our Quantitative Studies, Edward Jeff Daniel Jr.
Open-End Questions: Exploring The Qualitative Nature Of Our Quantitative Studies, Edward Jeff Daniel Jr.
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
The role of research in forensics is a wide and varied one. As with most social science research methods, the trend in forensics has turned from primarily case study/observational research to a mass of empirical data. Our quantitative studies have many problems from sample and questionnaire design to inappropriate or inaccurate statistical analysis. One of the basic reasons that these problems abound is that non-researchers are assigned the task of research. While it would be impossible to tackle all of the problems in the quantitative surveys done in the field of forensics, one of the best ways to improve the …
The Role Of Research In Individual Speaking Events, Colan T. Hanson
The Role Of Research In Individual Speaking Events, Colan T. Hanson
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
As school administrators face increasing pressure to provide a rigorous rationale for funding requests and a strong accounting of the benefits from funds expended, the forensic community will need to adopt an offensive posture, if the activities program is to remain a vital part of the overall communication program. Therefore in adopting an affirming stance, the forensic community will need a viable data base to sustain its case. The need for integrating an active research component into the life space of the forensic community is rapidly becoming a necessity. To help the forensic community sustain itself, not only is there …
New Wine In Old Wineskins: Questioning The Value Of Research Questions In Rhetorical Criticism, Richard E. Paine
New Wine In Old Wineskins: Questioning The Value Of Research Questions In Rhetorical Criticism, Richard E. Paine
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Recent years have seen a trend toward the inclusion and heightened valuing of research questions in competitive Rhetorical Criticism (Communication Analysis). The inclusion of this content element is quite a new phenomenon on the national-level competitive circuit. In fact, the absence of such research questions in competitive speeches was highlighted by Ott as recently as 1998. But by 2007-2008, the inclusion of a research question was established as essentially de rigueur for a vast number of judges. For example, consider the ballots received this past year by a competitively successful rhetorical criticism entry I coached. At one tournament, all five …
The Pitfalls, Perils, And Promise To Increasing Forensic Research, Daniel Cronn-Mills
The Pitfalls, Perils, And Promise To Increasing Forensic Research, Daniel Cronn-Mills
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Based on the above statement by Harris, Kropp, and Rosenthal (1986), I feel compelled to qualify my opening sentence to this article. I opened by stating "Research, in fact, provides the foundation for all we do in forensics." A more truthful statement is that "research should provide the foundation for all we do in forensics." I am not convinced this is the case.
Overcoming Obstacles To Scholarly Engagement, Edward A. Hinck
Overcoming Obstacles To Scholarly Engagement, Edward A. Hinck
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
This paper reaffirms the idea that scholarship is essential to advancing the professional and knowledge based identity of the forensic community. To develop a vision for future scholarly activity, the paper outlines some possible areas for consideration in developing writing and research programs, reviews some of the obstacles that stand in the way of a more active community of forensic scholars, and offers solutions that hold promise for advancing the mission of scholarship in the intercollegiate forensic community.
Student Research As A Method For Developing New Forensics Leaders, Ben Walker
Student Research As A Method For Developing New Forensics Leaders, Ben Walker
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
For years, a call for more forensic research has echoed across the nation. While some respond to the continued challenge, many others have not. Numerous programs have disappeared from the collegiate forensic map over the years, with the questioned legitimacy and effectiveness of forensic programs and forensic professionals cited as the reason for their disappearance. In order to maintain a strong participation of programs, students, and coaches, we must develop strong leaders who, through research, will promote and stabilize forensics in the collegiate scene. As forensic leaders, it is our responsibility to nurture students into leadership positions where they, through …
