First Amendment Vs. Business Orientations Of Broadcast General Managers And News Directors, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

A two-state survey found that general managers and news directors prefer their own judgments, and those of audience members, to government regulation. General managers support the First Amendment when it is good for business, while news directors show some support for business freedoms.

The no-compete clause has become an expected part of a broadcast news employee's contract. Covenants not to compete are contract provisions in which the employee agrees not to engage in a trade or business competing with the employer (Carter, 1992). The covenant not to compete is of particular interest to both the station and the employee (Emory Law Journal, 1982}. These covenants attempt to limit the employee from performing specific duties in competition with a former employer for a specific period of time, in a specific geographic area.

The study of the diffusion of innovations attempts to understand how new things or ideas, after a period of time, become widely adopted throughout a group or society.

Everett Rogers (1983), one of the pioneers in this area of research, sees the diffusion process as essential to understanding social change. Diffusion, as Rogers sees it, is essentially a communication activity. Accordingly, social change consists of the introduction of something new - invention, followed by the process of diffusing the invention - this is done through all forms of communication, and finally the process ends with some type of "consequence," or …

Radio General Managers And News Directors In The United States: A Descriptive Analysis, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

A national survey of radio station general managers and news directors explored their demographic characteristics and stands on social issues. News directors' support for a national health care program, their lack of support for unregulated business, their lack of trust in private enterprise to look out for the workers' welfare, and their less negative view of labor unions may be explained through their own experience, as well as those of their newsroom employees.
