As scholars in the fields of political science, media research, and social psychology endeavor to understand crucial aspects of emotionality in the media, there is a growing need to methodologically address the communicative and discursive aspects of affective constructions in media texts. This article argues that by breaking down mediated emotional experiences represented through language in a set of identifiable elements, such as subject, emotion type, valence, intensity, proposed action, and object, those experiences could be used as workable and potent units of analysis when studying discursive and ideological media constructs of emotionality. Digital Transformation In Tempo 1955-2022: Disruption, Journalistic Field And Transformative Capital, Ignatius Haryanto

This article discusses the digital transformation at Tempo, one of the most prominent Indonesian news magazines. Under Bourdieu’s term, the ‘journalistic field’ that Tempo operates today had shifted from the autocratic regime under Suharto’s New Order (1966-1998) to a more open and democratic digital era. This article argues that Tempo was slow in anticipating the changing environment, which not only introduced the technological shift but also changed social and political contexts, forcing Tempo to transform into a new digital organization. This teaching activity re-introduces the concept of digital third spaces and how to use them as complementary newsgathering tools. Students are tasked with visiting these spaces to listen to Black women. In other words, they will observe content and engage in conversations with digital third space visitors to better educate themselves on the topics, issues and concerns of Black women and learn how to take this information and formulate story ideas for improved news coverage of and about Black women.
