Animal Ethics And Animal Welfare Science: Bridging The Two Cultures, David Fraser Dec 1999

Animal Ethics And Animal Welfare Science: Bridging The Two Cultures, David Fraser

Animal Welfare Collection

Since the 1970s, scientists studying animal welfare and philosophers writing about animal ethics have worked toward the common goal of understanding and articulating our proper relationship to animals of other species. However, the two groups approached this task using such different concepts, assumptions, and vocabulary that they functioned as two distinct ‘‘cultures’’ with little mutual understanding or communication. Some of the best known ethical writing created barriers for scientists because it tended (1) to focus only on the level of the individual rather than making some decisions at the level of the population, ecosystem or species, (2) to advocate single …

U.S. Census Nears; Results To Be Questioned, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It is the largest peacetime activity of the United States government, and since its inception in 190 takes place every 10 years. It will employ, at its peak, 860,000 workers who will receive a major portion of the $4.5 billion that Congress recently appropriated for the task. And the total population will be recorded for one day, a far cry from the 18 months that were necessary for U.S. Marshals who tried to find everyone in 1790."

Local/Global Conference Stages Conversation About Queer Future, Chandan Reddy Jul 1999

Local/Global Conference Stages Conversation About Queer Future, Chandan Reddy

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

On April 23rd and 24th, CLAGS hosted Local Politics and Global Change: Academics and Activists Thinking About a Queer Future. The conference employed an innovative structure within which panelists, rather than delivering papers on their individual skill area or academic interest, were asked to respond from their located standpoint to prepared questions. These questions elaborated upon the broad topic of each panel and roundtable, which also included extended Q&A periods that encouraged conversation between "audience," moderator, and panelists. To describe the format seems noteworthy because it contributed in part to one of the most outstanding features of this conference: There …

Data were collected from a sample of 57 older adults (aged 55 and over) from three Las Vegas Senior Centers using an instrument developed by the investigator. Politics, Pedagogy, And Shaping Public Policy, Jill Dolan Jan 1999

Politics, Pedagogy, And Shaping Public Policy, Jill Dolan

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

We never exactly know when history is going to catch up with us, when we'll be in the midst of a crucial moment to which posterity will refer as key, as significant, as a lynchpin on which other moments, other decisions, other understandings were founded. The impeachment hearings recently conducted in the House of Representatives dragged us all, unwilling and amazed, into a dark hour of American politics, one in which partisan fury and ideological hatred are translated into strategies of power that disregard and reverse electoral politics. There's much to say about the disappointing performance of Bill Clinton as …

Neighbourhood Cohesion And Sense Of Community In A Local Church Context, Colin Cowie Jan 1999

Neighbourhood Cohesion And Sense Of Community In A Local Church Context, Colin Cowie

Theses : Honours

The nature and implications for growth of sense of community (SOC) in a local church setting were explored. In study one, the Neighbourhood Cohesion Index (NCI) and Sense of Community Index (SCI) were completed by 108 Sorrento Anglican Church members. Principal components and reliability analyses indicated that the church-referenced SCI was an appropriate assessment tool. Three factors labelled values, influence and neighbourhood concern emerged in a SCI principal components analysis. A hierarchical multiple regression indicated that talking to neighbours about religion and the SCI values subscale predicted 22% of the variance in the NCI. The prediction that the church-referenced SCI …

Life On "Ez" Street: Linking Community Economic Development To The Empowerment Zones And Enterprise Community Policy Goals, Sherri Wallace Dec 1998

Life On "Ez" Street: Linking Community Economic Development To The Empowerment Zones And Enterprise Community Policy Goals, Sherri Wallace

Sherri L. Wallace

This is an examination of the literature on community economic development and its relation to the stipulated urban empowerment zone and enterprise community policy goals: economic opportunity, sustainable community development, community-based partnerships, and overall community strategic vision. The central argument is that community development and economic development are simultaneous occurrences. From this theoretical framework the Empowerment Zones and Enterprise Communities (EZEC) program emerges as an effective tool in assisting minority community economic development. Given this context, my objective here is to examine the nature and role of the EZEC program's key principles as a new revitalization strategy in urban revitalization …
