From Panels To Shelves: The Evolving Intersection Of Comics And Italian Libraries. History, Issues, Perspectives, Andrea Tosti
From Panels To Shelves: The Evolving Intersection Of Comics And Italian Libraries. History, Issues, Perspectives, Andrea Tosti
SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education
Despite comics' popularity and cultural significance in Italy, its integration into Italian libraries has been slow, problematic, and uneven. This is reflected in the scarcity of academic research on the topic, which demands further in-depth exploration.
In the context of Italian libraries, characterized by chronic underfunding and staffing shortages, comics might be perceived as a low priority. However, as essential cultural institutions, libraries must strive to reflect both the contemporary era and the evolving reading habits of their audience. Comics, in this regard, could prove to be – and in part already are – a critical resource, a 'booster' for …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper aims to identify the acceptance of cataloguers on cataloguing modules in the Open-Source Integrated Library System in an academic library in Malaysia. The research design adopted for this study is descriptive research surveys. This study involved cataloguers in the academic university library in Malaysia that have used Koha as their open-source software since 2013. The survey used an online questionnaire distributed via email to all cataloguers in the selected libraries. The questionnaire comprises questions related to acceptance of module features and module usability on the cataloguing module. The 5-point Likert scale is used to measure the cataloguer acceptance …

Diversity, Inclusion, And Social Justice In Library Technical Services, Rhonda Kauffman, Martina S. Anderson
Published Works
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries recently embraced a large-scale initiative to incorporate the values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice (DISJ) into library practices. In early 2017, the MIT collections directorate task force on DISJ released a report with recommendations for embedding DISJ values into the daily work of archives, technical services, preservation, scholarly communications, and collections strategy staff. This chapter focuses on the challenges and opportunities in undertaking a sustained effort to achieve DISJ specifically within technical services. The authors highlight how technical services staff can use their unique position within libraries to dismantle existing structures of …

Statistics-Bierce Library Study, Tyler J. Hushour
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This is a report from two surveys that I created and administered to students and faculty at Bierce library who came to the Circulation Desk or the Tech Desk, as well as some of my other findings when periodically looking around the library to see where students like to study or hang-out. There was a written survey given at the Circulation Desk, and a different survey given at the Tech Check-Out Desk. The project is for Melanie Smith-Farrell, the head of Access Services, and is based on a similar study Ian McCullough did in the science library. While this is …

Hitting A Moving Target: Cataloging In An Age Of Emerging Technologies, Robert Bothmann

Catalogers of yore could rely on the constancy of the handful of formats that were available prior to the digital revolution, knowing that when they woke up each morning a book was still paper and a motion picture was still film. Then one morning things changed and the catalogers of today's world can expect a new quirk every 2-3 months. What do you do when acquisitions gives you slotMusic or some other new-fangled medium to catalog? The PlayAway sound recordings gave you fits and just when you figure it out the PlayAway View comes along. This session will cover some …

Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez
Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez
Works of the FIU Libraries
This poster will attempt to apply the techniques used in Queer Theory to explore library and information science’s use and misuse of library classification systems; and to examine how “queering” these philosophical categories can not only improve libraries, but also help change social constructs.
For millennia, philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, have used and expounded upon categories and systems of classification. Their purpose is to make research and the retrieval of information easier. Unfortunately, the rules used to categorize and catalog make information retrieval more challenging for some, due to social constructs such as heteronormality.
The importance of this …

Linking Old Librarianship To New: Aligning 5-Steps Of The Innovator's Dna In Creating Thematic Discovery Systems For The Everglades, L. Bryan Cooper, Margarita Perez Martinez
Works of the FIU Libraries
This poster presentation from the May 2015 Florida Library Association Conference, along with the Everglades Explorer discovery portal at http://ee.fiu.edu, demonstrates how traditional bibliographic and curatorial principles can be applied to: 1) selection, cross-walking and aggregation of metadata linking end-users to wide-spread digital resources from multiple silos; 2) harvesting of select PDFs, HTML and media for web archiving and access; 3) selection of CMS domains, sub-domains and folders for targeted searching using an API.
Choosing content for this discovery portal is comparable to past scholarly practice of creating and publishing subject bibliographies, except metadata and data are housed in …

Librarying! How Librarian Expertise Can Assist Student Academic Services To Create Pathways For Student Success, Darren Sweeper, Catherine Baird
Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works
This poster will describe how you can position your library as a catalyst in campus-wide partnerships. Stewart C. Baker posits the idea of using “Library” as a verb. Just as we “Google” when the need arises, our students, faculty, and staff need to know how to “Library.”We will describe how we made connections with a variety of campus offices responsible for student success, in particular, the Educational Opportunities Fund Program. By creating new pathways for librarian expertise and the promotion of resources, we introduced these student-focused academic units to “library-ing.” The goal was to enable our colleagues to provide excellent …
Academic Libraries In Poland University Of Warsaw Library As An Example Of Library Transformation In Post-Communist Poland, Ewa Dzurak
Publications and Research
This article examines the complex changes that have occurred in Polish academic libraries, especially the University of Warsaw Library (UWL), after the fall of communism in 1989.Shortly afterwards, thanks to grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, an accelerated transformation in all library practices began. In preparation for automation, the authority file was created, introducing the process of applying international standards in bibliographic description in a new climate of interlibrary cooperation. The Library of Congress classification and access to open stacks were introduced for the first time in Poland in a newly constructed UWL building. A crowning achievement of the …

The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite
The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite
Publications and Research
The lesbian and gay past is an interpretive battleground that mainstream archives have refused to enter, assuming few risks in collecting, naming, or identifying archival collections. At the same time, libraries offer up worlds to those who work to unearth the secrets there.
The New York Public Library's 1994 "Becoming Visible" exhibit trumpeted The Arrival of lesbian and gay history to New York's cultural mainstream. The NYPL exhibit denies the library's role in secreting lesbian and gay history, and diminished the contributions of community-based archives to the exhibit.
