Abstract

Purpose – In this paper, a call to the library and information science community to support documentation and conservation of cultural and biocultural heritage has been presented.

Design/methodology/approach – Based in existing Literature, this proposal is generative and descriptive— rather than prescriptive—regarding precisely how libraries should collaborate to employ technical and ethical best practices to provide access to vital data, research and cultural narratives relating to climate.

Findings – COVID-19 and climate destruction signal urgent global challenges. Library best practices are positioned to respond to climate change. Literature indicates how libraries preserve, share and cross-link cultural and scientific knowledge. …

Low attendance at Open Access Week events caused academic librarians to ask: What can we do to further open access without asking faculty and students to attend events during such a busy time of the semester? Instead of reaching out to faculty directly, librarians at the University of Tennessee Libraries are reaching out beyond the campus community. Health sciences, social sciences, and scholarly communication librarians offer a workshop to East Tennessee nonprofit organizations to assist them in finding and accessing scholarly research. In this article we reflect on our time as editors of JMS during the period 2003-09. First we describe the context as we saw it on assuming editorship of the Journal and the actions that we took to improve the quality of scholarship published in the journal in order to set JMS on the trajectory to become a world-leading Journal. We articulate our view of what quality means in this context and observe that we eschewed the USA-Europe divide. This is a major issue for our students as they leave our universities and our subscription resources and move on to become practitioners of their field. This session will outline the different types of freely available technical information - including patents, government funded technical reports, and open access journal literature - and demonstrate how to access them. Better Health Sciences Collections With Oclc’S Worldcat, Carol Watwood

As the world's largest bibliographic database. OCLC's WorldCat has unique value in identifying materials for building a high-quality health sciences collection. WorldCat on FirstSearch is a valuable addition to the librarian's collection development toolbox to help compensate for the cessation of the Brandon/Hill lists. The database's large size, powerful keyword search feature, currency, and the ability to highlight important information through its interface all contribute to its usefulness in collection development. Several pilot projects and ongoing research in open access, "work-based" record design hold much promise for increased versatility.
