Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic libraries are increasingly becoming affected by rapid changes in information technology, competition from the private information sector and fear of losing the monopoly position. Academic libraries’ dilemma is evident, based on the declining support from parent institutions and declining use trends. In the face of stiff competition, their reaction has to be quick to preserve their place. A Primer On Grant Writing For Foundation Support For First-Time Grant Writers In Academic Libraries: Challenges And Opportunities, Peter L. Kraus

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In a majority of academic disciplines, grant writing is a skill that is often self-taught or acquired informally by trial and error. Few academic disciplines have grant writing as standard part of their curriculum at the graduate level. In the past, grant writing has received little or no emphasis in traditional library education since library science faculty themselves have a poor record of pursuing external funding. Yet, grant writing is a critical skill for new and experienced librarians. For many librarians, the prospect and challenge of writing a grant can seem daunting; however, with institutional support and the support of …

In 2004, the Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine formed its Marketing Team in response to the changing perceptions of academic libraries. Our charge is to explore new and innovative ways to promote the library and to define its place within the larger university community. One of the primary goals of the group is to reconnect users with the library as place at a time of 24/7 electronic resources. Under the leadership of Fogler’s public relations and outreach coordinator, team members representing different departments in the library perform their marketing duties in addition to their regular jobs. …

DLTS Faculty Publications

The 21st century technical services librarian has access to a plethora of electronic and online work tools from which to choose to complete daily tasks. This paper investigates this phenomenon of inconsistent technical services online work tools.
