In the late 1970s through the 1980s, sanctuary movements emerged in the United States to support and provide sanctuary for immigrants and asylum seekers without a legal status of U.S. citizenship. This movement has its roots in the ancient church tradition of offering sanctuary to people accused of crimes. Religious leaders offered protection against the government in the name of their beliefs. It is a cycle that has often been repeated throughout history from the medieval European era to abolitionists helping runaway enslaved people in the United States to the contemporary movements existing today. This is a study of the influence of religious sacrality on modern Ukrainian literature, particularly poetry, analyzing those sacred meanings that the current Ukrainian mentality actively uses. So far, it eclectically synthesizes the ideological impulses of traditional Christian religiosity (which even in the times of Communism retained its natural strength, especially in the Western regions of Ukraine), and elements of Soviet ideologemes and pragmatism of the modern transitional period. Within these four sections, I decided, for the purposes of this project, to focus on my interactions with Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldúa; Passing by Nella Larsen; Sister, Outsider by Audre Lorde; and Not Vanishing by Chrystos. Anzaldúa’s work focuses on her identity as a queer, Chicana woman inhabiting the U.S.-Mexico border. Passing details the experiences of a Black woman who can pass as white. Lorde’s work is a collection of essays which center her experience as a queer, Black woman. Chrystos’s work is a book of poetry centered in their queer, Two Spirit, Indigenous identity. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between acculturative stress and religion/spirituality of international students. This study utilized Sandhu and Asrabadi’s (1994) Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students (ASSIS) as well as the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSORF) created by Plante and Boccaccini (1997). Much research exists on how international students adapt and acculturate to a host country. This research will add to the body of literature that exists regarding how international students use their religion/spirituality to deal with acculturative stress.
