Indonesia: Twenty Years Of Democracy By Jamie S. Davidson [Book Review], Colm A. Fox Sep 2020

Indonesia: Twenty Years Of Democracy By Jamie S. Davidson [Book Review], Colm A. Fox

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In Indonesia: Twenty years of democracy, Jamie S. Davidson looks back over the two decades since Soeharto’s fall, focusing on the ‘tensions, inconsistencies, and contradictory puzzles of Indonesia’s democracy’ (p. 4). Refreshingly, the book moves beyond the common approach of studying the similarities and differences between the contemporary democratic period and the Soeharto era. Davidson identifies, labels and skilfully guides the reader through three separate eras in Indonesia’s recent democratic history: the innovation period (1998–2004), the stagnation period (2004–14) and the period of polarisation (2014–18). Each era is analysed in parallel fashion, with subsections on politics, political economy and identity-based …

Review: M.B.B. Biskupski, The United States And The Rebirth Of Poland, 1914-1918, Robin Lauermann

Educator Scholarship

By the turn of the 20th century, a significant wave of immigrants from Poland had fled their homeland as it marked over one hundred years under partition rule by the Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian empires. As they resettled in diaspora, including a significant number in the United States, they formed a significant base of political activity to influence other nations’ foreign policies In this scrupulously detailed work, M.B.B. Biskupski characterizes the activities by various civic associations of Polonia and their leaders to raise American consciousness, first for relief and military support of the war-ravaged lands of Poland and then for …

Review Of Gitelman, L. (2014) Paper Knowledge, Sarah Evans Ph.D.

Faculty Works: DH & NM (2010-2019)

Media histories are valuable in an age when an increasingly high percentage of our lives are mediated through new and constantly evolving technologies.
