“The Politics of Public Media" was the theme for the 2017 Jim Joyce Symposium on Political Communication at the University of Nevada-Reno. The symposium, co-sponsored by KNPB Public Television and KUNR/Reno Public Radio, commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act. The Public Broadcasting Act was signed by President Lyndon Baines Johnson on November 7, 1967; it established the framework for public broadcasting in the United States, creating the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and leading eventually to PBS and NPR. The Hope College Library, as a participant in the CIC Consortium on Digital Resources for Teaching and Research, sought to extend the usage of Shared Shelf beyond a repository for local archival and art collections to a platform for faculty and student scholarship and creative output. The objective of this presentation is to help faculty learn how to effectively teach students about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health, health promotion, and health care disparities. Learning outcomes for this session include how to utilize specific tools, strategies, and resources for incorporating essential LGBT content into undergraduate and graduate nursing programs.

This plenary presentation given by Dr. Paul Smith was part of a panel on LGBTQ health in nursing. Smith identifies and explains the relationship between self-reported beliefs and behaviors of nurse practitioners toward gay and lesbian clients and reported nursing education related to cultural competence. He also identifies strategies to incorporate LGBT health into nursing curricula.
