An Assessment Of Yinger's Nondoctrinal Religion Using The Intrinsic-Extrinsic Concept, Warren Hamby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis is an attempt to examine an operational definition (or measure) of nondoctrinal religion proposed by J. Milton linger in 1969. Yinger, in his 1969 publication, suggests that the majority of scientific studies of religion have been pursuing a less valuable course by assuming definitions of "religion" which restrict the concept to mere traditional forms of religion. Such definitions tend to prevent researchers from examining important and abundant structures which serve religious functions but dc not resemble traditional institutionalized religion in form. Such structures serve the function of dealing with chaos, the human situation, and ultimate concern. There is …

The Theatrical Innovations Of Charles Laughton, Gary Joseph Jones Jul 1972

The Theatrical Innovations Of Charles Laughton, Gary Joseph Jones

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In most journalistic studies the film career of Charles Laughton overshadows his theatrical activities to the extent that the reader is hardly aware of the importance of his theatrical innovations to the theater of our time. The more commercial side of Laughton’s career was publicized while his artistic efforts, as characterized by the innovations, were frequently forgotten. More people remember him as the man who played Captain Bligh in the movies than as the man who worked with Bertolt Brecht, created the First Drama Quartette and developed a new American art form, Readers’ Theatre.

The rationale of this study is …

Libertinism, Political Activism And Religious Conservatism: Some Correlates Of Anomie, George Wade Jul 1972

Libertinism, Political Activism And Religious Conservatism: Some Correlates Of Anomie, George Wade

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study concerns college students in particular, the attitudes they hold toward both their society and their own personal life within that society, and how these attitudes affect their behavior. The six specific variables being dealt with are libertinism, religious conservatism, political activism, personal anomie, systemic anomie, and probusiness. These are viewed from the perspective that the attitudes and opinions held by the students will influence their behavior. Specifically, this perspective views feelings of anomie or alienation (the two terms will be used interchangeably throughout) as affecting the religious, political, and libertine views and behavior of the students. This …

Glover Cary: A Political Biography, Doris Brenner Jul 1972

Glover Cary: A Political Biography, Doris Brenner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The elements of contrast within the character of an individual and the heights of attainment in a lifetime of activities appear sometimes unexpectedly and serve to distinguish that person from the rest of mankind. Indeed, if personality, intelligence, physical attractiveness, and the love for political life were the only attributes of Kentucky Congressman Glover Cary, although they are unquestionably magnetic qualities, his life and works might deserve their repose from the critical observations of the historian. He, however, demonstrated an unusual concern for his constituents and a certain devotion to humanity, rare qualities if one applies the general connotative meaning …

Asiatic Cholera In Kentucky 1832 To 1873, Nancy Baird

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Asiatic cholera has been called the scourge of the nineteenth century, for it caused the untimely death of millions throughout the world. During its four visits to the United States, unknown thousands of Kentuckians fell victims to the disease. In attempting to prevent the dreaded scourge, Kentuckians became more conscious of the need for cleaner cities, pure water and adequate sewage disposal. Modern waterworks facilities, sewage treatment and disposal facilities have provided the means by which the United States has conquered this scourge of the nineteenth century, for with these facilities cholera is the easiest of all communicable diseases to …

Black Conversions To Catholicism: An Analysis Of Louisville Data, Lynda Dickson May 1972

Black Conversions To Catholicism: An Analysis Of Louisville Data, Lynda Dickson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to Alphonso Pinkney, religion has been important to black people. He writes: Religion has traditionally played an important role in the life of black Americans. The character of their religion is a reflection of their uncertain status in the larger society. Denied the opportunity to participate as equals in the religious life and other institutions of the larger society, black people organized their own religious denominations as a means of coping with the social isolation which they encountered. As the opportunities for social, economic, and educational advancement became feasible for the black however, he became less satisfied with his …
