Co-Adventurers In Discovery: Collaborative Research Between Undergraduate Students And Faculty, Rajeswari Murugan, Evan Haskell
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
There are many opportunities available beyond the classroom for undergraduate students to engage in cutting-edge scholarship. Some of the opportunities include study abroad, internships, and independent study. We strongly suggest that students experience such programs. Independent study courses can serve not only to sharpen the student’s engagement skills with the open-ended questions of current research, but also to enhance his or her own relationship with faculty. In this article we share the experiences of a biology student and a mathematics faculty member coming together as co-adventurers learning from each other about the mechanisms and mathematics involved in cardiac arrhythmia through …
America’S Idol? How The Contestant Most Voted For Doesn’T Always Win, Jason Gershman
America’S Idol? How The Contestant Most Voted For Doesn’T Always Win, Jason Gershman
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
The reality television show American Idol has some biases which display themselves in data charts and curves of contestants’ telephone voting patterns. Some of the biases examined include issues of geography and performance order. This paper shows that the format of the show leads to biases in favor of contestants who are from, and have large fan bases in, certain parts of the country. Another major flaw is a bias in favor of contestants who sing later in the show. I show that the order the contestants sing in is not random chance but instead carefully chosen by the producers. …

Bird Profiles, Joshua Feingold
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
As part of our undergraduate program in the life sciences, students participate in a wide array of field trips to local and remote locations. These images were obtained during field trips to Everglades National Park, Florida; San Diego, California; and the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. I have been intrigued by bird behavior. These profiles allude to their personality differences and the diversity and beauty of nature. It is my hope that these images also provoke emotional reactions in us.

Athletic training education has begun preparing students to enter clinical practice using evidence-based practice procedures. These procedures have been extensively studied and evaluated throughout various medical professions. Athletic training lends itself readily to the development of this skill set with the incorporation of clinical experience courses incorporated into curricula. The incorporation of evidence-based medicine skill development with clinical experience provides a foundation for successful skill acquisition. With the recent addition of evidence-based practice guidelines as a content area for athletic training education proficiency assessment, educators and clinical educators are burdened with fostering this multi-faceted skill in novice learners. Considering the …
How To Get Hit On The Head And Laugh About It: Humor In The Formation Of Self, Eric Mason
How To Get Hit On The Head And Laugh About It: Humor In The Formation Of Self, Eric Mason
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
Students come to a university for many reasons, but rarely would one say that one of those reasons is to tell (or listen to) jokes. But I think humor can be much more central to students’ educational experience than they, or we, realize. This paper explores what role humor might play in the academic identities of university students. It does not call on teachers to begin telling jokes as a way of engaging students with course material. Rather, it asks teachers to recognize how comedic activities and identities that seem to undercut traditional classroom decorum can be necessary to intellectual …

Why Progressives Need A (Minimally) Realist Theory Of Truth, Darren Hibbs
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
What is being asserted when one claims that a statement, proposition, or belief is “true”? This is the central question that concerns philosophers who investigate the nature of “truth.”

This past summer I was one of three artists selected to participate in the first ever Moving Current Dance Collective/New Grounds Choreographic Residency at the 2011 Florida Dance Festival. This two-week intensive program involved working closely with dancers, choreographers, and choreographic mentors to develop and create work. The creative process began with the physical investigation of giving and receiving support. This “support” could be given through the dancer’s body, and many interesting images emerged in the studio as I asked them to move one another with only their head or allow someone to carry their weight. These simple tasks were …
