A Childe Bibliography: A Hand-List Of The Works Of Vere Gordon Childe, Terry Irving, Peter Gathercole

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

A hand-list devoted to the published writings of Vere Gordon Childe (1892-1957). It includes political writings, letters to newspapers, and reviews, as well as his books, articles and contributions to books. It covers his Australian years as well his academic career in Britain. Because its aim is to create an historical record of both Childe's work and the continual contemporary interest in his ideas, the list is arranged year by year to highlight his productivity and the periods when attention to his work was greatest. There are four sections: (i) books and monographs; (ii) articles and chapters; (iii) reviews; and …

Constructing Legal Narratives: Law, Language And The Media, Jane Johnston, Rhonda Breit Jul 2009

Constructing Legal Narratives: Law, Language And The Media, Jane Johnston, Rhonda Breit

Jane Johnston

This paper proposes using the theory of narratology to connect to legal discourses and processes with the way the media translate the law into news. Focussing on the Australian context, it looks at the choice of language used my media in covering courts, how stories are told and retold within these primarily textual environments, as well as the selection processes used by journalists in covering these rounds. The paper extends the argument for a narratology of courts, to a narratology of court reporting, suggesting fundamental criteria of story, discourse and the interpretative context be examined. It foreshadows the need for …

Fm Radio News: Spreading The News Or Spread Too Thin?, Denise Raward, Jane Johnston

Jane Johnston

United Kingdom investigative reporter Nick Davies has coined the term 'churnalism' to describe the UK print media's reliance on wire copy and press releases for the vast majority of its news. This study looks at this trend in Australia, focusing on the FM radio industry and a case study of one radio station which also serves as a news 'hub' for a national network. Davies found that up to 80 per cent of Fleet Street news is based on wire service, other media or press releases. This Australian FM newsroom study found nearly 90 per cent of networked news bulletins …

Apparition: Holographic Art In Australia, Rebecca Coyle, Philip Hayward May 2009

Apparition: Holographic Art In Australia, Rebecca Coyle, Philip Hayward

Dr Rebecca Coyle

Long before virtual reality captured the imagination, holography provided artists with a new, challenging, three-dimensional medium. Its very immateriality demanded that artists approach its illusions in unforeseen and inventive ways. Apparition provides the first detailed study of holographic art in Australia, of the artists producing it and the scientific institutions assisting them. It includes examinations of the work of Paula Dawson, Alexander, and Margaret Benyon and of the institutional collaborations developed by artists such as George Gittoes and David Warren. The book also provides an important historical survey of this advanced-technology art and canvasses the theoretical, perceptual and philosophical issues …

Bee Pollination In Agricultural Ecosystems, Tammy Horn Dec 2008

Bee Pollination In Agricultural Ecosystems, Tammy Horn

Tammy Horn

In her endorsement of this landmark study of pollinators’ role in Industrial Agriculture and wildlife management, May Berenbaum writes that this book should be ‘‘required reading for practitioners and policymakers alike.’’ Although at times, the book’s structure feels like a forced march, I concur with Berenbaum for the most part. It is a powerful expression from fifteen of the more important voices shaping discussions ranging from genetically-modified organisms to alfalfaleafcutting bees to biocontrols. To have them collected in one collection is a testament to pollination management being taken seriously as a profession. The writers included in this book are impressive …

Documenting Young Britten: An Overview Of The Cataloguing And Technical Solutions Developed During The First Phase Of The Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, Jonathan Manton Dec 2008

Documenting Young Britten: An Overview Of The Cataloguing And Technical Solutions Developed During The First Phase Of The Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

The Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, currently underway at the Britten-Pears Foundation, aims to produce a fully integrated online resource presenting, for the first time, a complete chronological listing of Britten’s entire output both published and unpublished, including all juvenilia. Of the estimated 1,200 works to be included in the catalogue, approximately 735 constitute the composer’s juvenilia, the documenting and analysis of which has been the core aim of the project’s first stage over the past three years. The article outlines the bespoke technical and cataloguing solutions developed during this initial stage to deal with many of the challenges presented as a result of developing …
