Brunsman Family Slide Collection: An Investigation Into The Development, Preservation, And Digitization Of Slide Collections, Michele Gibney

This paper presents a review of slide history, their preservation, and digitization. The author completes a small-scale digitization project on 609 family slides featuring images from the 1940’s to 1960’s. Relevant literature is analyzed that provides information on the preservation of images and the digitization of historical materials. A methodology and results section is included for the digitization project of family slides along with accompanying images of the process.

The paper by Mark A. Greene and Dennis Meissner outlines a problem which is currently occurring in archives across the country as well as the world. They state the case that processing collections to the item level is creating enormous backloads which are unprocessed. So much time is spent on refoldering, removing staples, and documenting each item in a collection that there is no time to actually process the majority of an archives’ holdings. Greene and Meissner conducted a survey and compared responses from 100 respondents in order to compile a well-researched report on how much time, money, and resources …

Appraising archival material with the intent to document or represent a specific institution, community, or other entity involves identity construction on the part of the archivist. In order to judge records as representative or part of a given entity, the archivist must have a concept of the boundaries of the given entity’s identity and whether or not the proposed records fall within these boundaries. In order to determine boundary, identity must be constructed and reinforced by the archivist. Four primary identity constructions are proposed: Accepted by All, Self-Identified/All-Else Excluded, Insider Accepted/Outsider Excluded, Outsider Accepted/Insider Excluded.
