Ron Brackett, a news director at the St. Petersburg Times, solicited letters to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War II. This collection includes submissions to the newspaper. Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

Commander David S. Goddard arrived at the United States Maritime Training School at Government Island, near Alameda, California, in 1940. He enrolled in one of the first classes at that facility to train licensed officers for the Merchant Marine. He then served aboard the USMSTS American Sailor when that vessel was commissioned as a training ship in the summer of 1941. After receiving a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, Goddard also spent time at the Maritime Service Training Station at Port Hueneme, California, during the summer of 1942.
