In November 1993, Niela M. Eliason, a free-lance writer and St. Petersburg resident, permitted the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library to copy the contents of two scrapbooks in her possession. The “City in Transition” series documented the social and cultural history of St. Petersburg through the voices of civic leaders and common citizens alike. As stated in the first column, these essays examined "a changing community--the people, the buildings, the activities, the attitudes and reactions, the progress and deterioration." In the fall of 1992, Mary E. Allcorn-Grigsby, Director of the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, negotiated a gift of underground newspapers and alternative press publications from the University of Missouri, Columbia. This collection occupies 36 archival storage boxes comprising approximately 45 cubic feet and includes 2,712 single issues, with some duplicate copies, representing over 70 titles. All issues fall within the inclusive dates from 1965 to 1978, with the bulk of the material representing the period from 1968 to 1972.
