For many years, the Temple Terrace Public Library maintained copies of the Temple Terrace Beacon. This local publication, first published in 1931, focused on news and events in the City of Temple Terrace as well as the surrounding University community. Kelsey Peduzzi, a librarian at the Temple Terrace Public Library, embarked on a project to scan and digitize issues of the newspaper in the library’s possession. After this successful project led to the creation of a digital archive of more than 800 issues of the newspaper on the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative’s digital collections webpage, the library decided that …

Womyn’s Words was a monthly periodical published by the Women’s Energy Bank, Inc. that began in 1983. Pat Ditto and other editors and contributors to this publication devoted their efforts to the St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay area in support of the local LGBTQ+ community. Although they primarily advocated for the empowerment and civil rights of women, they also spent a significant amount of time supporting political causes that would benefit the gay community as a whole. Significantly, Womyn’s Words, as early as 1996, was promoting intersectional awareness with their “Afro-Centric Series.” A large portion of their publications was used …

The majority of the newspapers came from Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania, though occasional issues from areas such as Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, and other cities also reside within the collection. This collection includes a variety of underground newspapers, various pamphlets and flyers, and various documents related to political activities, social justice, American involvement in the Vietnamese conflict, and other events during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Collected by William “Bill” Hamilton, a 1995 graduate of the University of South Florida, these materials illustrate the topics of discussion from that time and how the alternative and underground press characterized the rapidly changing social landscape. This collection consists of more than 450 panels of the “Muggs and Skeeter” cartoon drawn by Wallace Bond “Wally” Bishop, a longtime resident of St. Petersburg. Wally Bishop and his wife, Louise C. Bishop became leaders in a variety of social circles and cultural organizations in the greater St. Petersburg area. In the late 1930s, they bought the elaborate mansion constructed by C. Perry Snell on Brightwaters Boulevard at the mouth of Coffee Pot Bayou. Emil August Nordstrom served as an engineer for the City of St. Petersburg, later as a partner in an architectural and engineering firm in St. Petersburg, and also as executive director of the Housing Authority of St. Petersburg. Born in 1883 or 1884, Nordstrom passed away in St. Petersburg on August 26, 1973, and was survived by his daughter, Dorothy King. This small scrapbook contains clippings and information about Nordstrom’s engineering work and structures he was involved with in the City of St. Petersburg between 1926 and 1937. This scrapbook includes a compilation of newspaper clippings from a variety of sources and covers the mid-1930s. Approximately one-half of these clippings focus on stories related to St. Petersburg or Florida more broadly, while the remainder cover events as broad as English royalty to the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936). The compiler of the materials in this scrapbook is unknown, though the name “Billy Dean” appears on this document. Earl Weir, a longtime St. Petersburg resident who now lives outside of the area, originally donated materials related to his family’s history and the Tampa Bay region in 2012. Many items from the original accession were digitized versions of home movies, and they were received in multiple installments. Some artifacts were also included in the original accession, such as an electric clock from Webb’s City, a longtime department store located in St. Petersburg. At some point in time, they were acquired by the Neighborhood News Bureau, a partnership of USFSP and other entities that documents events in and shares news of Midtown, an area of southern St. Petersburg with a substantial African American population. Gerald A. Notaro, librarian emeritus at USF St. Petersburg, donated his collection of photographs and ephemera from St. Pete Pride, an annual event in the Grand Central District that has grown into one of the largest gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) celebrations in the southeastern United States. The rich collection of photographic images documents St. Pete Pride events in the early 2000s. Notaro donated these items on 15 March 2012, shortly before his retirement from the USFSP faculty.

This collection was received in June 2008 in bound notebooks from Karen A. White, the Regional Chancellor of USF St. Petersburg at the time and an accomplished violinist. Under the byline Mary Nic Shenk, Dodd wrote regular reviews of operas and musical performances in the St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times) beginning in the early 1960s. This donation includes articles and clippings removed from bound notebooks collected by Shenk, covering the period from the early 1960s forward into the 1980s. This collection includes nearly 800 items donated by W.R. “Butch” Evans in summer 2011. Evans, a resident of Pinellas County, collected the artifacts, chert, pottery sherds, lithic tools, shell tools, and other items while exploring coastal areas and estuaries of Florida. He located “surface finds,” items providing evidence of pre-Columbian settlements that appeared along beaches, river beds and shorelines, and other similar areas of Florida. Out of respect for those middens and mounds remaining, Evans did not violate or desecrate historical sites while collecting these materials. The materials in the Jordan Park Collection nearly were discarded; the good fortune of the preservation of these items is considerable. Poynter Library received the various photographs, property records, maps, documents, and scrapbooks from Dayton Stone on 18 June 2009. Stone had discovered these items while cleaning out an abandoned property in St. Petersburg. Subsequent review of the materials revealed the necessity of some conservation work and arrangement due to the condition in which these items had existed prior to his fortunate discovery. Ray Metzler Brubaker (5 April 1923-1 May 2009), the son of a minister, grew up in a conservative Christian Pennsylvania household where he was forbidden to listen to the radio. Eventually his parents permitted him to listen to religious broadcasts and news programs; this, along with his Christian upbringing, undoubtedly influenced the course of Rev. Brubaker's life. Walters was born in Washington D.C. and joined the Navy in 1943; between 1957 and 1958, during what was known as the International Geophysical Year, Walters was a supply officer at the McMurdo Naval Air Facility in the Antarctica. The McMurdo Sound Naval base, along with other stations like it, was used for Operation Deep Freeze III, a Navy supported research expedition undertaken to gather scientific data about the Antarctic. Nigel J. Watson, longtime real estate agent and activist, moved into the Presbyterian Towers in 2004. Located at 430 Bay Street NE in downtown St. Petersburg, this facility has offered senior residential living since opening in 1968. In the early 1960s, Southwest Florida Presbyterians sought solutions to the problem of people (mostly retirees) who had difficulty locating affordable housing. With loan assistance from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, local Presbyteries began to build facilities. Ms. Susan B. Donoff, a graduate student in history at the University of South Florida, investigated the horrific 25 March 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. As part of her research, she sought to examine how the fire transformed the labor movement and how notable leaders of the time—especially Frances Perkins and members of Tammany Hall— assumed important roles in promoting progressive reforms. A member of the USF faculty since 1980, Raymond O. Arsenault specializes in the social, political, and environmental history and historiography of the American South, though his teaching and research interests cover nearly all areas of American history, culture, and civilization. He serves as the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History. In the summer of 1998, Arsenault donated some of his research files and miscellaneous materials to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. When Dean Karen Spear departed for Colorado in June 1990, Bridges—then coordinator of the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg—accepted an appointment to serve as interim dean. The College of Marine Science, a Tampa-based academic unit of the University of South Florida, physically resides on the St. Petersburg campus. Since its beginnings as a Marine Science Institute in the late 1960s, this unit and its mission have grown to occupy an academic department within the College of Natural Sciences, later the College of Arts and Sciences, and as a distinct college within the University. The thirteen photographic prints included in this collect represent images primarily from the early years of the St. Petersburg campus.

The Clearwater Sun newspaper was published between 1914 and 1990. Few original issues prior to the 1970s exist, and issues from the earliest years (pre-1926) do not exist in microfilm. The St. Petersburg Evening Independent served as the Sunshine City’s afternoon newspaper between 1906 and 1986. Similar to the Sun, early issues rarely exist. This collection represents a small sample of original issues of the Clearwater Sun and the Evening Independent from the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Korean War. Doris J. (Jeannie) McDaniel-Pappas, a Florida native and alumni of Eckerd College’s Program for Experienced Learners, donated this collection of family records to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library on 30 July 2007. These materials document the activities of her father, Archie Tillman McDaniel II, a veteran of the Second World War who served in Japan after the war came to an end and became an early advocate for civil rights.
